Cordova is built upon a rich foundation of bounties from both the sea and the land; add to that the traditions of many cultures of people and the result is a novel Alaskan community. Natives lived near the shores of the lake, and coastal areas of Prince William Sound guaranteed a food source with the return of the salmon each spring. Salmon also attracted others; by 1887, two canneries were operating in the Odiak Slough area. By 1915, Cordova became known as the ""Razor Clam Capital of the World."" High in the Wrangell Mountains lays the rich Kennecott copper lode; Cordova's deepwater port was selected as the most accessible terminus for copper ore shipment. A 196-mile railroad delivered the first train loaded with copper ore to Cordova in 1911, beginning an era of prosperity and growth. Cordova has since survived the loss of the railroad, devastating fires, nature's earthquakes, and man-made oil spills.

Glen Ellyn took its name from a Victorian real estate development whose massive promotional campaigns brought this unusually beautiful village to the attention of city dwellers eager to move their families away from the grimy, coal-fired environs of Chicago.
The story begins with hardy New Englanders who felled trees to build log cabins, broke the virgin prairie sod, and trapped wild game in the marshlands that would become greater Chicago, continuing through the radical changes that came with the railroad and the Civil War.
From Potawatomi Indiansand pioneers to an important Underground Railroadstation; from a luxurious lakeside health resort with a fabulous grand hotel to one of Chicago's premier suburban communities, Glen Ellyn presents the village's rich history with evocative photographs from the collection of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society.

Founded by Abner Evans in 1793, the town was originally called Evansburg in 1858, but was renamed Conneaut Lake in 1892. As alien as it may seem to us today, ice was not always readily available at a moment's notice, and Conneaut Lake found success harvesting ice from the lake, wrapping the blocks in sawdust, and storing them in mammoth ice houses until it was time to ship the ice to large cities. Today, the large ship structure protruding from Oakland Beach is still a familiar sight to visitors, but the lake is used mainly for recreational purposes, such as skiing, boating, swimming, and fishing. The largest Muskie ever caught in the state of Pennsylvania was from the waters of Conneaut Lake!

It became so well known, a person could mail letters from anywhere using only the address of Winona Lake--and it would arrive there. Winona Lake has been the home of Billy Sunday and Homer Rodeheaver and the headquarters of the Free Methodist Church, the Grace Brethren Church, and Grace College and Seminary. Billy Graham had an early beginning in the Rainbow Room at the Westminster Hotel. Will Rogers, Helen Keller, John Philip Sousa, Galli Curci, and Ernestine Schumann-Henk are among those who have made appearances at Winona.
