Regular price $24.99 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 248): Computation results in '-Infinity'%This collection of vintage postcards of Kauai spans 100 years, beginning with Hawaii's annexation and Kauai's history as a tourist destination.
Postcards bring back the history of Kauai from the earliest visitors, arriving first by sailing vessel and then steamers to the infancy of air travel. Surely some of the people who saw these postcards for the first time thought there must be a good amount of artistic license being taken--surely this little slice of paradise was too good to be true! As droves of tourists descended upon the island from mainland United States and all across the world, they realized if anything, the postcards couldn't capture Hawaii's real beauty. Viewing these vintage postcards, the reader will be reminded of the glory years of the Kauai Surf, the Coco Palms, and the Hanalei Plantation, showing many other favorite landmarks that have been lost to time and Mother Nature.

Regular price $24.99 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 248): Computation results in '-Infinity'%With over 230 historic photographs, Salem, Ohio provides an excellent visual image of what the past was like in a little Quaker town called Salem.
Covering the time period from 1850 to 1956, this book offers a glimpse of the downtown of yesteryear, with photos of the old buildings, businesses, trolley cars, and homes. The people of Salem are also shown as they looked, worked, and played in earlier times. Every photo in Salem, Ohio is a conversation piece with a unique story to tell, which represents a small part of the city's history. Salem has always been seen as a quiet, traditional, and peaceful city—largely because it was founded by Quakers. In fact, the name Salem, which comes from the word Jerusalem, literally means City of Peace.  The city has many claims to fame, including its active role in the Underground Railroad and the Anti-Slavery Movement. Salem was also the site of Ohio's first Women's Suffrage Convention in 1850. Salem has long been the industrial manufacturing center of the area, providing jobs for thousands of workers from miles around. Product names like Mullins, Deming, Silver, Eljer, American Standard, and Bliss have been an important part of both the Salem and world economies for many years.

Overlooking Washington, DC, Fort Myer holds a commanding view of America's capital. As the war ended and reconciliation began, only this fort remained and was later renamed to honor the US Army's first signal officer, Brig. Built in 1863 from the Custis-Lee estate, one of 70 defensive Civil War fortifications of the capital, this historic US Army post was known as Fort Whipple. Gen. Albert J. Myer. These acres of Arlington Heights are distinguished by unique events, including the beginnings of military aviation, the Army Cavalry showcase, ""The Three Sisters,"" and the National Weather Bureau. During World War I, Army officers trained here to fight ""Over there,"" and today two units call Fort Myer home: the Army Band (""Pershing's Own,"" since 1942) and the 3rd Infantry (""The Old Guard,"" since 1948). Photographs and text present the evolution of this national landmark in its first 100 years, including its buildings, people, and events.

Dorney Park was founded by Solomon Dorney in 1884 and was held by Dorney until the early 1900s, when Jacob Plarr assumed ownership. The Plarr family operated the park until 1985, with the exception of a brief period during which it was owned and operated by the local trolley company, the Allentown-Kutztown Traction Company. The park is known today as Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Dorney Park illustrates the development of one of America's greatest historic amusement parks. Among the vintage photographs and postcards one will find images of the Mill Chute, or the Tunnel of Love, as it was also known; the old wooden roller coaster under construction; the Zephyr train, a headliner in the park for many years; Castle Garden; the original Dentzel carousel; the racetrack; and the merry-go-rounds that were once a major attraction at the park.

Fertile lands once home to Native Americans sprouted a development unlike any that had ever been seen in the Chicago area. The Westwood subdivision, started by John Mills just before the start of the Great Depression, resulted in the construction of over 1,500 brick bungalows in two years. A second postwar boom coincided with the Italian American migration from the old Chicago neighborhoods. The next 50 years would see continued growth and change. When people think of Elmwood Park, images of food often accompany those thoughts. Envisioning a barbecue pork sandwich or a ""combo, juicy, sweet and large ice, no-lid"" brings back memories of standing in long lines, cash in hand, among people of all races united in the desire to satisfy their appetites.

Mule-drawn railways gave way to electric streetcars, and what was once the Confederate capital of the state became today's vibrant commercial hub of northwest Louisiana. Drawing from their extensive image collection, authors Joiner and Roberson depict the forgotten scenes and lost stories that form the complex layers of Shreveport history. From the famous performances of Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show to the infamous red-light district, from the decline of vigilante justice to the victims who perished from yellow fever, Joiner and Roberson recover and remember lost Shreveport.

The Chautauqua Institution was started in 1874 by the Normal Department of the Methodist Episcopal Church as a two-week program to instruct Sunday school teachers of all Protestant denominations. The program proved to be a popular combination of worship, education, and recreation and each year brought thousands of visitors to the beautiful shores of Chautauqua Lake. As Chautauqua became a model for lifelong learning and the good use of leisure time, hundreds of similar sites were built across the continent. The Chautauqua program included lectures, classes, symphony concerts, opera, theater, art, and recreations such as golf, tennis, swimming, and sailing. In time, the movement embraced all denominations and faiths. Today, Chautauqua offers a vacation filled with many opportunities in a setting that could be from a century ago.

of Tiot, South Dedham, The Hook, Swedeville, The Ward,
Cork City, Dublin, South Norwood, Morse Hill, Christian Hill,
Westover, and Ellis. The Norwood Historical Society--founded
at the very beginning of the twentieth century--has served as a
repository of images from all these communities, and it is with
great pride that the society offers the enclosed selections from its
photographic archives in this timely publication.
Many of the images in this collection, which chronicles
the community's development from a rural village through
the industrial and technological eras, have never before been
published. The glass-plate negatives on which they were
preserved were only recently discovered in the society's attic.
Some images are attributed to the famous Norwood photographer
Fred Holland Day, whose interest in the history of his hometown
and passion for the art of photography provided the inspiration
for this book. All of the images work together to illustrate a way
of life now long forgotten, and to document the existence of
historical sites, some of which remain standing today and others
of which have succumbed to the ravages of time.
