The Seeing Eye traces its origin to the trenches and battlefields of World War I, where legions of soldiers were blinded during years of brutal engagements. After the war, Germany trained dogs to guide its blinded veterans. In the late 1920s, a small group of innovators took it upon themselves to teach blind and visually impaired people in North America to use dog guides. The Seeing Eye has since helped thousands to achieve greater independence, dignity, and self-confidence, using specially trained Seeing Eye dogs as their companions.

Using rare photographs and documents, The Seeing Eyedetails this remarkable organization and its pioneers, including German shepherd breeder and Seeing Eye founder Dorothy Harrison Eustis; Morris Frank, the first visually impaired American to learn to use a Seeing Eye dog; and Frank's own dog, Buddy. The story follows the first students as they navigate the busy streets of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1929, and Morris County, New Jersey, where the fledgling organization moved in 1931 and where it continues to operate today.The Seeing Eyedocuments the campuses and the students, as well as the faithful dogs, their care, and their training. The reader will meet the dedicated employees and volunteers who have made the organization possible, as well as the graduates who have gone on to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

Glen Rock, a photographic journey, documents the growth of the community from the late 1880s through the late 1950s. The early strawberry fields, farms, mills, and hotels made way for today's stores and homes. The dirt roads once used by horse and buggy, stagecoach, and bicycle were paved for early automobiles. The original schools became too small to hold the growing number of children, and new schools were built. Glen Rock's leaders created municipal departments, civic organizations, emergency services, businesses, and places of worship. Parades, picnics, and pageants entertained Glen Rockers. Wars and the Great Depression brought citizens together, and residents gathered to help each other and the nation.

Washington Township, Morris County showcases the rich agricultural, industrial, and recreational history of this New Jersey Skylands community.

Washington Township, Morris County is situated on the south branch of the Raritan River. This area was originally home to the Lenni-Lenape tribe. In early 1700s, immigrants came from Germany, Holland, and England to settle the area now known as Schooley's Mountain and Fox Hill. The rich, fertile soil of the south branch of the Raritan River gave them opportunity for successful agricultural endeavors, the main source of livelihood for many generations. Small villages grew to have their own stores, churches, schools, gristmills, and post offices. The introduction of the Jersey Central Railroad in 1876 helped the quarry and iron ore mine industries flourish. Schooley's Mountain was a major resort due to the mineral springs, with visitors such as Ulysses S. Grant and Thomas Edison. In 1974, Schooley's Mountain County Park was opened to provide recreational opportunities to the community.

The Wildwoods are located on an island at the southern end of New Jersey's expansive coastline.

Bergen County saw much of the American Revolution from its own doorstep. Close to British-occupied New York City, this corner of New Jersey was divided by the Revolution. Some people were staunch Loyalists or Patriots, in disagreement with their families and neighbors. Others wavered or remained neutral, while others changed their minds as was expedient. In the end, the years of hostilities led to massive damage and upheaval within the community as men either left home or stayed nearby to fight for or against secession from Great Britain.

Although its land had been settled by Dutch, English, and French homesteaders as early as the seventeenth century, the borough of Fair Lawn was not established until 1924. It had been part of Saddle River Township and, before that, of New Barbadoes. As late as 1876, it was an agricultural community, home to several vegetable and fruit farms and dairies. The need to house workers in the mills of nearby Paterson led to the rapid suburban development of the town. Noted for its residents' civic volunteerism and for its history, Fair Lawn is home to eight sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places-sites such as the Cadmus House and the Dutch House-all of which are included in Fair Lawn. This book contains images of the nationally famous Radburn planned community and the construction of Memorial Park and Pool, completed entirely by volunteer efforts, beautifully combining the borough's agrarian past with the community spirit of the twentieth century. This richly detailed book is a testament to the devotion of Fair Lawn's residents to their hometown.

Egg Harbor City was founded as a refuge from the sweeping nativism of the Know-Nothings, a group that tried to limit immigration and naturalization into the United States. Egg Harbor City was a place where German Americans could maintain the traditions, language, and lifestyle of their fatherland. The city was designed in rectangular blocks with lots for building, gardening, or farming. Parks were built and a harbor was planned on the north side of the city with rail lines connecting it to the Camden and Atlantic Railroad. Following the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Egg Harbor City's wines earned the community great respect, and it became known as the ""Wine City,"" drawing hundreds of visitors to its many wineries. Egg Harbor City celebrates the early years of the place once known as the most German city in the United States of America.

Long Branch is one of the greatest nineteenth-century American cities.

For decades it was the premier summer resort in the Northeast, and a list of visitors to the area reads like a Who's Who of the nineteenth century: Presidents Arthur, Garfield, Grant, Hayes, Harrison, McKinley, and Wilson all vacationed here, as well as Diamond Jim Brady, Lillian Russell, General Winfield Scott, Henry Ward Beecher, ""Buffalo"" Bill Cody, Horace Greeley, and General George Meade. Leaders in fashion, finance, theater, politics, and the military flocked to Long Branch by the hundreds because of its tremendous natural beauty, Victorian mansions and hotels, and proximity to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D. C.

For most, summers on the New Jersey shore were replete with warm, sandy days at the beach and cool, breezy nights at arcades on the boardwalk.

Manasquan, with its quaint, tree-lined streets and hometown flavor, offered much more. To its visitors, who came from New York, Philadelphia, and everywhere in between, Manasquan was the quintessential seaside resort. To its residents, the town has always been the perfect place to live, work, and play. Manasquan Revisited, the second volume of Manasquan's photographic history, delightfully captures more rare moments from the past of this historic town. From shops along Main Street, to tours of Victorian homes, to the boats and docks along the Glimmer Glass, it is easy to see that Manasquan is a tranquil corner of yesterday's way of life.
