During World War II, the base was called Laughlin Field and trained bomber pilots in the B-26 Marauder. In 1899, the Tennessee Copper Company lifted its first shovelful of red clay dirt from what would become the new Burra Burra Mine shaft overlooking the tiny East Tennessee village of Ducktown. At its peak, the company would employ more than 3,000 workers, drawing from small towns and communities in three states, and would become the largest US mining company east of the Rocky Mountains and south of Lake Superior. It would also become the home of the largest sulfuric acid plant in the world. John Streckfus began his small Acme Company in 1889 with one wooden packet boat, the steamer Verne Swain, out of Rock Island, Illinois, carrying people and goods on the Mississippi River. Boonesborough is one of America's most historic and scenic places. In the spring of 1775, legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone led a party of settlers to this place on the Kentucky River. They erected Fort Boonesborough as headquarters for Richard Henderson's Transylvania Company. The fort withstood a siege by 400 Shawnee Indians in 1778. Bridges of the Mid-Hudson Valley

The Hudson River bridges, iconic structures of the New York State Bridge Authority, are the cornerstone of the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Opened in 1924, the Bear Mountain Bridge was the first vehicular crossing of the Hudson River, south of Albany. Twentieth-century growth in the Hudson Valley can be traced to each bridge opening, the result of grassroot efforts by local residents. The Mid-Hudson Bridge, named for the region these bridges span, was designated an “Engineering Epic” following the tipping of the east caisson that delayed construction for a year while engineers and laborers struggled to right that caisson in the waters of the Hudson River. The plan for the Rip Van Winkle Bridge required the creation of the New York State Bridge Authority, when funding was otherwise impossible during the Great Depression. Three more bridges were built connecting remaining areas of the Mid-Hudson region.The last crossing became the “twin spans” of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the New York State Bridge Authority’s most traveled span. In 2010, the New York State Bridge Authority gained ownership of the bridge structure of the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian walkway built on the old Poughkeepsie Bridge, which opened for trains in 1889.

The Wyandot tribe called the area TuEndieWei, which roughly translates to "where the rivers meet," because of its position at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers. George Washington referred to it as a "pleasant point" while he surveyed the land as a young man. He would later consider the town as the capital of the 14th American colony, Vandalia.
