The town of North Castle in Westchester County is about 35 miles north of New York City and includes Armonk, Banksville and the Eastern District, and North White Plains. Home to half of the 2,145-acre Kensico Reservoir and Dam (primarily built by Italian stone masons using locally quarried stone), North Castle protects New York City's water supply, which inundates the lost Kensico Village. During the early 1920s, Route 22 became the "Gateway to the Berkshires," bringing prosperity to farm stands, restaurants, dance halls, bars, and hotels. During the late 1920s and through the 1930s, hundreds were treated to barnstorming, weekend rides, stunt flying, and parachuting at the Armonk airport. Lavish country estates at the turn of the 20th century became country clubs, housing subdivisions, and corporate parks by the beginning of the 21st century. Today, international corporations IBM and Swiss Re headquarter in town. In 1819, Thomas Beard decided to build his town along the Illinois River. He was able to finance it immediately by selling lumber and honey, which were abundant in the region. On Main Street, next to the riverbank, Beard had a ferry and a hotel. Business was good. The town was platted in 1829, and by 1833, a pioneer wrote that people were living in tents because they could not build houses fast enough to meet the demand. Soon there were farms, orchards, flour mills, and a pork-packing plant. Most of the supplies for the inland farms and even Springfield came through the Beardstown waterfront. Beardstown has lost most of its industry, but it still has a pork-packing plant. The company hires a number of foreign employees, and when they retire, many choose to stay in Beardstown. It remains a safe, pleasant place to live.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral, easily the most prominent edifice in Lawrence County, overlooks the city below and consummated the dream of 6,000 dedicated Masons in 1925. In Portland's first decades, the northwest side remained dense forests. Native Americans camped and Chinese immigrants farmed around Guild's Lake. In the 1870s, Slabtown acquired its unusual name when a lumber mill opened on Northrup Street. The mill's discarded log edges were a cheap source of heating and cooking fuel. This slabwood was stacked in front of working-class homes of employees of a pottery, the docks, icehouses, slaughterhouses, and lumber mills. Development concentrated along streetcar lines.
