Rochester and Rochester Hills grew in a territory of three rivers, abundantly fertile pastures, and rolling oak forests on land once considered uninhabitable. Though only 30 miles from Detroit, official government reports of swampy and barren land deterred settlers. In 1817, the Graham family disregarded these reports, instead following the advice of Native Americans to reach a territory governed by a triumvirate of creeks, which were forceful enough to power several mills yet gentle enough to support thriving farms. Only 20 years later, every plot in Rochester had been sold. Later the village was made a stop on the network of Michigan railroads, cementing its fate as a vigorous and popular community. With a past boasting such illustrious citizens as auto baron John Dodge and internationally prominent obstetrician Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen, with corporations like Parke-Davis and philanthropic organizations such as Leader Dogs for the Blind, Rochester remains a source of innovative leadership as well as a model for successful suburbia.

Harrison dates to 1891, during the exciting days of the Northwest's expansion. The area's forests were full of old growth pine, fir, and cedar. Lakes and rivers provided transportation. Logging camps, sawmills, homesteads, and towns were springing up. Harrison was such a town, growing from a squatter homestead to a bustling city of 2,000 with stores, hotels, saloons, and churches in 12 short years. Mills lined the waterfront vying for space with the railroad and steamship docks. The boom did not last, but its legacy is a small, proud, picturesque city on the shore of beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Branch Brook Park, located in Newark, was America's first county park. The park was established in 1895 as the cornerstone of the Essex County Park System. The vision for Branch Brook Park came in 1867, when Newark park commissioners retained Olmsted, Vaux, and Company to identify a site for a park in the city. That vision matured into a reality that is now, 140 years later, woven into the urban experience of Newark and its neighboring towns. The significance of Branch Brook Park has been nationally recognized with its placement on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Home to the Newark Cherry Blossom Festival, organized long-distance runs and bicycle races, picnics, the Chrysanthemum Show, the New Jersey Symphony Under the Stars, boating on the lake, prom pictures, and sports activities from baseball to bocce to soccer and tennis, Branch Brook Park remains a constant source of great beauty.

D'Iberville and the community of St. Martin share more than a common origin: from their colonial beginnings they have been one, now separated only by an invisible county line. The first is named after Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d'Iberville, commander of the French fleet who initiated settlement of Louis XIV's claim to the Mississippi Valley and adjacent coast of the Mexican Gulf in 1699. The latter is named for Raymond St. Martin de Pattier (or Jorquiboey), who married into the pioneer Ladnier family that homesteaded the north side of Biloxi Bay in the late 1700s and were the first landowners when the colonial era ended and the American flag was hoisted in 1811. After statehood in 1817, foreign and American emigrants arrived by ship and covered wagon. Before the Civil War, the families north of the bay included Spanish, Austrian, Italian, and their "African chattel." From this frontier beginning, farmers and fishermen spawned ranching, timber, and seafood industries as well as shipbuilding and mercantile enterprises. By World War II, it was a town, and in 1988 it became a city within the core of this old frontier.

Orleans County is a quiet, rural county in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. In the late 18th and early 19th century, southern New England settlers moved north to the hills and valleys where the Native American Abenaki had long resided. Life in Orleans County was hard and isolated, with travel often curtailed by intense winter weather and deep spring mud. But instead of leaving the beautiful land, the people made their own civilization and settled into country life. Images of America: Orleans County highlights the men and women who farmed the land and took part in the growth of industry. Historic photographs portray the county's evolution as the number of farms decreased and factory work increased, transportation progressed from wagon and sleigh to the automobile and railroad, and agriculture moved from horse-powered equipment to gas-powered tractors.

Haverhill's immigrants--they came for the jobs that were so plentiful in the booming shoe industry. They came to flee poverty, insecurity, and massacres. They came because their relatives had come before them, or because they would find old neighbors in this new place. Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the early twentieth century was a magnet for newcomers. They came from such diverse and faraway places as Asia Minor and Eastern Europe. They were Poles and Lithuanians, Greeks and Armenians, and Italians and French-Canadians. They joined the Yankees and Irish who had previously immigrated to the city. The result was a wonderful mix of customs, languages, religions, and names. The images in this book are family treasures. They have been lovingly taken down from places of honor on living room walls. They have come from boxes of family photographs, carefully preserved for future generations. Some photographs traveled with the immigrants from their homes far away. In all, this book offers a loving glimpse of some of the many people who helped to shape modern Haverhill.

Crawfordsville, founded in the early 1820s, has a diverse history for a small town located in rural, west-central Indiana. The town was the site of an important land office, which attracted many settlers, as well as speculators, to the area. Crawfordsville became known for its intellectual and progressive atmosphere and earned the nickname of the "Athens of Indiana," especially for the numerous residents with literary accomplishments. Wabash College was established in Crawfordsville in 1832, and the institution's teachers and students have contributed greatly to the development of the town's culture and prestige. In addition to its authors and poets, Crawfordsville has had its share of musicians, artists, soldiers, and statesmen who have played a role far beyond the borders of Montgomery County, of which Crawfordsville is the seat. Images of America: Crawfordsville is a photographic tour of the people and places that have marked this town from its early days. This riverside city was established when a rumor surfaced that a military road would be crossing over the Snohomish River. The road never materialized. By 1866, the "mother city" of the new county was little more than a clearing in the woods, offering a store and a saloon, and was known up and down the river as Cadyville. Ten years later, the name Snohomish City was established, along with the first newspaper, the first school, and the first literary society in the county. Farms, logging camps, and trading posts throughout the area pivoted around this growing city and manufacturing center. Even Seattle was not much larger and offered no more amenities. Today 9,000 residents call Snohomish home, and as the area develops farther away from the riverside and its historic roots, this book invites the reader to pause and remember.

Rooted in Dutch traditions, Prospect Park was established in 1901. With a view of what would become the New York City skyline, Prospect Park evolved into a community that placed an emphasis on family values and character. Children would often be seen on the streets jumping rope or playing together at the Hayfields, which later became Hofstra Park. Parents worked locally in the borough and neighboring Paterson, known as "Silk City." Families stopped by Verblaauw's Hardware for household goods and bought produce and flowers at Aiello's, which remains a vibrant business today. Though the borough has undergone an exceptional cultural transformation, Prospect Park has maintained its core values through traditions, cultural practices, and religious observances, with the Prospect Park School remaining the center of community life. New Hope Ministry and the Prospect Park Volunteer Fire Department remain essential to the life of the community. Prospect Park showcases the rich cultural, educational, and economic heritage of this northern New Jersey town.

But its fascinating past is as much a story about people as produce. At its peak, Seabrook employed 5,000 workers from 25 countries, speaking 30 different languages. Two professors and a preacher invented Columbus radio. It began with science experiments in classrooms and a minister's desire to expand beyond his churchgoing audience. By 1922, government licenses had been issued for WEAO at Ohio State University and WJD at Denison University. At this same time, a Baptist minister went on the air for an hour each Sunday morning using a 10-watt transmitter licensed as WMAN. In this story of Columbus radio, the work of the professors and the preacher will evolve into radio with advertiser-supported programs of information and entertainment. Three important radio stations will serve a growing Columbus radio audience in different ways: WEAO becomes WOSU, a national pioneer in using radio for teaching; WMAN becomes WCOL and in the 1960s is number one in audience size; and CBS affiliate WBNS becomes the class act of Columbus radio, retaining the major share of local listeners for many decades. Including many other stations of lesser influence, the illustrated stories of Columbus radio are told in this book.

Beginning around 1865, as the fledgling art and science of photography began to appear in cities and towns across the United States, a small group of photographers, using new methods and equipment developed a few years before in Europe, began producing and offering for sale stereographic views of the people, places, and events that made up daily life in the then nearly 40-year-old city of Grand Rapids. These photographic views were unlike others that had preceded them and when viewed using a special device, they presented a detailed, three-dimensional portrait of the young city. Once introduced, stereographic views of the city, alongside those of more distant lands, became wildly popular and soon graced the homes of many in this city and elsewhere. The stereographic cards themselves today offer a rare and detailed glimpse of the city, its residents, and some of the special and unusual events that occurred nearly 150 years ago.

With each major conflict of the 20th century, and finally with the relaxation of immigration quotas in 1965, waves of Filipino newcomers arrived on these shores. They advanced in their work at the shipyards, settled down, and started families, buying homes and establishing successful businesses. Now this active, politically empowered Filipino community numbers in the tens of thousands, yet traditional histories ignore its contribution to Vallejo's heritage.

The spirited Oakland neighborhood of Rockridge has been spotlighted in the national media twice in recent years. Hard-hit by a disastrous fire and named a top livable neighborhood by a national magazine, the north Oakland neighborhood has had a diverse and eventful history. Early booms in commerce and population pushed Oakland city boundaries east and north through farmland, toward the university town of Berkeley, and the neighborhood of Rockridge was formed. Shaped by its farms, homes, streetcars, interurban trains, shops, markets, movie houses, a quarry, and Oakland's first reservoir, Rockridge's story is one of hard labor in the quarry and the practice of the fine arts, of ethnic markets and the short-lived grand estates of mining tycoons, of the taming of wild creeks and the subdivision of open spaces. The town witnessed experiments in planned development, the effect of freeways and rapid transit, changes brought by the Depression and World War II, the transformation of College Avenue, and trends in home building that today allow the landscape to reveal Rockridge's history.

A gristmill, sawmill, iron forge, and screw factory began the taming of the wilderness. The Philips brothers eventually returned to England over political differences, but the town they founded carried on. Coal, timber, clay, railroads, and metal fabrication have created a community intensely proud of its history. Prone to flooding, the Moshannon Creek divides Centre and Clearfield Counties. One of New Jersey's earliest permanent Methodist camp meeting grounds, Mount Tabor embodied the austere evangelical fervor of 1869. Canvas tents on 16-by-25-foot leased lots surrounded Trinity Park, the focal point of all religious and social activity for 10 days in late August. The camp meetings were hugely successful, and the growing community needed more permanent housing. Narrow, two-story Victorian cottages with intricate porches and balconies began to sprout on the lots. In 1885, the octagonal-shaped tabernacle, with its soaring walls and heaven-high ceiling, was built. As early as 1891, the religious summer colony expanded its recreational activities, and by 1912, Mount Tabor was more of a summer resort than religious retreat. After World War II, most of the 350 cottages were converted to year-round use, and Mount Tabor became a community within Parsippany, welcoming people from all religions and backgrounds. Today the unpretentious charm of its humble beginnings permeates the quaint community, and modern residents, like their forebears, are drawn to the rich, spiritual heritage of goodwill and the delightful cottages that invite fellowship.

The Berkshires are famous for their stunning beauty and the almost eerie way in which they dominate the western sector of Massachusetts. The landscape was of tremendous appeal to photographer Bill Tague, who lived on a flank of Mount Greylock. Tague possessed a unique talent: he was equally capable of creating haunting landscape images as he was of drawing out the diverse personalities of his human subjects. Between January, 1952, and his death in November, 1990, Tague produced "Eagle Eye," a weekly page of photographs, for The Berkshire Eagle. From images of Mount Greylock through the seasons to candid portrayals of faces at Tanglewood, at Lake Pontoosuc, and at the Clark Art Institute, to telling shots of Norman Rockwell and Anna Mary "Grandma" Moses, Tague's eye was so astute that his life's work constitutes a discerning mirror held up to his time and place on earth.

Soon there were motels for travelers, businesses that catered to residents, and Riverside County's first drive-in theater. On its way to becoming the county's most urbanized unincorporated community, the town--originally called West Riverside--changed its name to Rubidoux in the 1950s to honor the pioneer family. Dubbed "Cabbage Heads" by their Rogers Park neighbors, the citizens of West Ridge boldly incorporated as a village in 1890, remaining independent until its 1893 annexation to Chicago. Over time, West Ridge blossomed from sparsely populated farmland into a dynamic neighborhood with Devon Avenue at its core. One of the largest development projects in nineteenth-century America, Boston's Back Bay was essentially a tidal basin until the construction of the Mill Dam (present-day Beacon Street) just after the War of 1812. By 1837, the area bounded by Charles, Boylston, Beacon, and Arlington Streets was filled in and laid out as the Public Garden, later the site of Boston's famous swanboats. In the late 1850s, the massive infill of the Back Bay commenced, and the earth collected from the hills of Needham was deposited in the city's "west end" for nearly four decades. As the new land began to reach Muddy River, the streets assumed a grid-like plan. The grand avenues eventually comprised Victorian Boston's premier neighborhood, and became home to the most impressive religious, educational, and residential architecture in New England.

Chosen for the beauty and utility of the graceful French Creek, the area now known as Saegertown was first settled by brothers Arthur and Patrick McGill in 1792. Nine years later, Holland Land Company agent Rodger Alden bought land from the McGills and built a mill along the creek, starting a community that thrives to this day. Around Saegertown chronicles how Saegertown and its neighboring villages and rural areas transformed from a small agricultural community into an area full of industry and tourism attracting the wealthy and influential to its elegant inns and healing mineral springs.
