With approximately 7,200 residents, Washington maintains a historic downtown square and a variety of vintage buildings and homes, many of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, it was designated a Main Street community.

Michael Kramme is professor emeritus at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, the former executive director of the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance, and a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Historical Society and the Blair House Corporation. The images featured are primarily from the collection of the Washington County Historical Society. Others are from the private collections of local historians.
