albums, cardboard boxes, and dusty attic trunks, the most touching stories of the region are found in the collected everyday memories of its people. Loudoun County: A Family Album takes readers on an intimate tour of the county's major towns and small villages through the eyes of the people who lived and worked in these communities. From candid snapshots taken on family vacations and school outings to early photographs of the town's first farmers and entrepreneurs, this volume of over 200 vintage images captures the everyday lives of the citizens who have persevered to make their home the beautiful, diverse, and charming place it has become. Showcasing the work of both Winslow Williams, one of Loudoun's best and most prolific photographers, as well as the efforts of doting parents and grandparents, friendly neighbors, and enthusiastic playmates from throughout the area, this book provides a one-of-a-kind glimpse at the county from a uniquely personal perspective.

The ghost of a brokenhearted Confederate soldier stares out a window waiting in vain for the return of the love of his life. Victims of a plane crash still linger at the scene of the tragedy forty-five years later. Union troops are still crossing the Shenandoah River through a hail of musket balls and cannon fire. From the legendary phantom coach of Carter Hall to lesser-known haunts along the county's back roads, a rock-throwing poltergeist, a smoky figure in a bedroom and strange creatures lurking in the woods, Michael Hess brings you the very best in Clarke County ghost lore.

Shipyard workers labored around the clock producing ships. Each vessel was considered "a death blow to Prussianism," which was required to achieve victory. The Peninsula experienced rapid population growth, necessitating the construction of houses and public transportation systems. Individuals on the home front worked like "soldiers without guns" as they organized bond drives, provided recreation for doughboys passing through the port, and honored local fallen heroes. World War I on the Virginia Peninsula is the first comprehensive pictorial history documenting the events that occurred on the
Virginia Peninsula during the war that was fought, as President Woodrow Wilson advised, to "save the world for Democracy." In nearly 200 compelling photographs from local museums, archives, and private collections, this volume vividly documents the places, people, and industries that framed the community's wartime experience.

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $18.74 Save 25%In rare photographs, the book reveals the history of the people and places of Lurary and Page County.
Formed out of necessity in 1831, Page County had a great need to operate within its own boundaries of the Massanutten and Blue Ridge Mountains. A very unique situation arose when this rural area was coupled with the discovery in 1878 of something as spectacular as the Luray Caverns. Along with this new fame followed a large influx of tourists, industry, and varied commerce into the entire county from the lifeline created by the formation of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in 1881. During the reconstruction years after the Civil War, and with the formation of ""land and improvement"" companies throughout the United States, Page County, along with the rest of the country, was booming. In fact, this unbridled growth was happening much too fast for this newly reformed country. This in turn brought about a severe recession in the 1890s that affected everyone, including the people of Page, no matter how secure they may have seemed with their new attraction.
