Hill Air Force Base is located 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah. It was named in honor of Maj. Ployer Peter Hill, who was killed in a crash of a Boeing B-17 at Wright Field. In World War II, the base became a maintenance, supply, and temporary surplus aircraft storage depot. Hill supported US forces in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. It also became a maintenance and support facility for the Air Force's turbojet aircraft and missiles during the Cold War. One of the base's important missions is support for the Utah Test and Training Range. Currently, Hill Air Force Base has 78 F-35s assigned to the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings. Lt. Col. George A. Larson, USAF (Ret.), served more than 22 years as an intelligence officer. He is a military and aviation writer who has published numerous books and hundreds of magazine articles.

St. George was founded in 1861 when over 300 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneer families were called on a mission to settle in a barren desert hundreds of miles from the nearest city. Pioneers grew cotton, and the warm climate reminded people of the Southern states, so it gained the nickname "Utah's Dixie." The first families strived to cultivate a life and farm on the banks of the Virgin River. Isolated from the rest of the country, St. George continued to struggle until the advent of the automobile gave it a spot on a major travel route. Founded by Mormons and settled by immigrants, Price, Utah, is a city of contradictions. Settled in the late 1870s, it was not until the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad discovered coal in the surrounding mountains that the town bloomed. Nearly overnight, trainloads of coal and other merchandise made Price into the commercial center of eastern Utah. Layton was settled in 1850 by pioneers in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. An outgrowth of Kaysville, Layton separated in 1902 following a 20-year legal battle. The city incorporated in 1920. The Layton Sugar Plant opened in 1915, and the town was an agricultural and ranching hub until 1941, when the United States entered World War II. In less than 10 years, by 1950, Layton's population had tripled, mainly because of Hill Field, a US Air Force maintenance base. Today, Layton is the largest city in Davis County and a regional retail center, anchored by the Layton Hills Mall. Fort Douglas

On October 26, 1862, Col. Edward P. Connor and the 3rd California Volunteers set up Camp Douglas for the purpose of protecting the overland mail and telegraph routes between Nevada and Wyoming. This began a long history of a U.S. military presence in the Salt Lake Valley Mormon community. Although the camp closed on October 26, 1991, the U.S. military still has a presence today on the east bench of Salt Lake City known as Fort Douglas. The base as it was during its heyday of the 38th Infantry is gone, but the parade ground and Gothic sandstone homes of Officers Circle, shaded by trees planted long ago, still remain at Fort Douglas. The horses have disappeared and the "old soldiers have faded away," but the stable and red-brick barracks also remain. A few old-timers still enjoy a stroll around the parade ground, listening for the canyon breeze ruffling through the trees that echo faintly the calls of yesteryear.
