Patricia LaLand, a native of Seattle, has served as the assistant director of James Madison's Montpelier in Orange for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. For several years she wrote a history column for O.C. Magazine and for the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star that led to this book. She has delighted in travel and has visited every continent except Antarctica. "Life," she says, "leads to unexpected tests and pleasures."
