Situated among the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jefferson County was formed in 1804. Brookville became the county seat in 1830 by virtue of its location at the confluence of the North Fork Creek and Sandy Lick Creek, forming Redbank Creek, and its centrality in the more than 1,000 square miles that comprised the original county. Settlers timbered, farmed, and rafted products to market when water was high. With the completion of the Allegheny Valley low-grade railroad in 1874 and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad in 1882, mining dominated the area. Rail transportation made possible the development of glass, iron, silk, sheet metal, clothing, and furniture factories. During World War II, several companies manufactured materials in support of the Allies. Today, timbering flourishes, as do the powdered metal and glass container industries. The Allegheny National and Cook forests to the north and historic Brookville, Punxsutawney Phil, and the nationally renowned Coolspring Power Museum all attract many tourists.

Chadds Ford grew along an important early thoroughfare where it crossed the Brandywine Creek. Travelers along this east-west highway between Philadelphia and Baltimore were obliged to ford the creek at property owned by businessman John Chads. At first, farms, mills, and homesteads composed the architectural landscape. As the town grew, so did businesses, such as the Gallagher General Store and the Chadds Ford Hotel. By the end of the nineteenth century, wealthy Philadelphians, attracted by Chadds Ford's pastoral setting, began to build stately summer homes. Around Chadds Ford features photographs from 1870 to 1950, when the town enjoyed the sophistication of these newcomers but still retained its rural flavor.

In the early 1900s, orphanages in the United States housed more than 100,000 children, thousands of those living in Pittsburgh. Buildings that became group homes were constructed through churches and fraternal organizations. The facilities, complete with boarding accommodations, dining halls, schools, playgrounds, and infirmaries, offered accommodations for 100 to 300 orphans at any given time. For the orphans living in such homes, everything was communal and privacy was nonexistent. Young boys and girls slept in overcrowded dormitories, waited in long lines to use the lavatories, and lost their individuality to the uniform appearance of being an orphan. Some children still had a living parent, but due to dire circumstances of the times, their fate was in the hands of those who operated the orphanage.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral, easily the most prominent edifice in Lawrence County, overlooks the city below and consummated the dream of 6,000 dedicated Masons in 1925.
