Historic Magnolia Cemetery

New settlements require proper resting places for their dead. Around 1763, British troops officially gained control of Baton Rouge and established a small fort on the Mississippi River there. However, since 1719, soldiers and white explorers had been buried near Native American mounds. Baton Rouge citizens were buried in the military cemetery near the fort, which accommodated Protestants; on private property; in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, opened in 1792; and in Highland Cemetery, so named in 1819. These downtown cemeteries had overflowed by 1850. A municipal, nondenominational cemetery was critically needed. Land on the eastern edge of town, dotted with magnolia trees, was purchased by the government, and Magnolia Cemetery easily became its name. Families of all races, religious affiliations, and economic status rest in Magnolia. Confederate and Union soldiers died there on August 5, 1862, and some became permanent residents. Historic Magnolia Cemetery's subterranean graves are accentuated by plain or elaborate headstones or simple footstones, sarcophagi, and numerous statues.

The Hyde-Murphy Company was one of the largest and most renowned specialty woodworking mills in the United States. The company was a producer of high-quality architectural millwork and constructed elegant homes, businesses, and public buildings around the country, with offices in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, DC. The company was founded in 1901 when two families merged their business interests. Joseph S. Hyde owned a sawmill in Ridgway, in the heart of the Pennsylvania lumber industry, covered with valuable, mature, and virgin timber forests. Walter P. Murphy owned a planing mill downstream on the Allegheny River in Freeport. Hyde floated his lumber downriver where Murphy turned the wood into architectural products. It was natural for the two families to merge to manufacture high-quality woodworking products. Murphy moved to Ridgway, and the company flourished. The business survived a devastating fire, rebuilding and prospering, and its artistic, distinctive woodwork can be seen today in the Library of Congress, the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Institution. The Hyde-Murphy Company ceased operation in 1961.

Cemeteries of Tacoma

During the mid-19th century, coffins were built with a drawstring bell to serve as an alarm in case one had the misfortune of being buried alive. It is believed that several such coffins reside in Tacoma's cemeteries. Fortunately, there are no reports of bells ringing in the middle of the night. Tacoma has numerous Victorian cemeteries that house renowned pioneers, like Thea Foss, Angelo Fawcett, and Brig. Gen. John W. Sprague, a hero of the Civil War who cofounded Tacoma and served as the city's first mayor. Several cemeteries are dying to tell their story and have not seen a visitor in over a century. Some have been abandoned completely, while others have been relocated numerous times. A number of graves that should have been moved are still in their original places. Beginning in the 1860s, the first vestiges of the resorts of Lake County appeared around the sparkling pools of the region's many hot springs and upon the shores of Clear Lake. Lured by the supposed medicinal qualities of the water, people flocked to rustic campgrounds and cabins to "take the cure" for their ailments, drink, and bathe, staying for long periods each summer. Within a few years, ambitious
entrepreneurs bottled the springs' mineral waters and built more luxurious accommodations and amenities. Although the claims of curative waters lost sway over time, resorts equipped with extensive
recreational facilities, dance floors, live music, bountiful food, hunting, fishing, and children's entertainment continued to draw visitors in droves. Families filled the resorts in summers, and by the 1940s, large group and society meetings as well as conventions began to utilize the resorts on spring and fall weekends. Though few original resorts remain, today, in 2007, the region's business directory lists 51 Lake County resorts.
