Strange and unusual things lurk behind the calm façade of Dearborn County.

Several legends surround Hillforest Mansion, the home of one of Aurora's founding families. Many have seen the ghost of a farmer and his mule at Carnegie Hall in Moores Hill. The glowing grave at Riverview Cemetery may connect to the 1941 Agrue family massacre. St. Mary's Church rectory is said to be haunted by the former priest, and the spirits at Whisky's in Lawrenceburg are not just in the drinks. Several schools in the area echo with the sounds of former students and staff, and numerous local residences house the spirits of former owners who never left.

When the Civil War erupted, the Union and the Confederacy faced the challenge of organizing huge armies of volunteers with little or no military experience. Crucial to this task was finding generals, and Indiana answered this call with nearly 120 of them. Although a competent division and corps commander, Ambrose E. Burnside's leadership of the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg proved disastrous. Jefferson Columbus was a relentless commander, but murdering his superior in a Louisville hotel halted his probable rise to major general. As commander of the Louisville Legion, Lovell H. Rousseau was the only Civil War general commissioned by a city. Compiling years of research, historian Carl E. Kramer provides biographical sketches of every identifiable Indiana general who attained full-rank, brevet and state-service status in the tragic struggle.

Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2018.

Begun in 1918 as the Eastern Division of the Indiana State Normal School, Ball State remained a branch campus of Indiana State until 1929 when it became Ball State Teachers College, Indiana's fourth public institution of higher education. In 1965 the teachers college became Ball State University. Throughout its history, Ball State's distinguishing characteristic has been the positive interactions between students, faculty, and members of the community. This book will show how these interactions have worked out at Ball State in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in social organizations such as student government, fraternities, sororities, and clubs throughout the region. The book will also show how the members of the Ball family have played a major role in the growth and development of the university.

For more than a century, Terre Haute earned its reputation as a sin city. One of the most notorious red-light districts in the Midwest, the West End, housed sixty brothels and nearly one thousand prostitutes at its height in the 1920s. Across this sordid scene strode the stylish and indomitable Edith Brown, the city's most famous madam. When Prohibition made the city bootlegger central, violence erupted as rival gangs vied for turf. Gamblers flooded in from all corners of the country, making Terre Haute's Wire Room second only to Las Vegas. Through it all, corrupt politicians like Mayor Donn Roberts profited handsomely from grift and deception.

The Battle of Fort Sackville appears in every history of Vincennes and Knox County, yet so much more defines this area. Everyone is familiar with George Rogers Clark, but few know about ordinary but accomplished figures like diplomat Hubbard Taylor Smith and Civil War veteran Joseph Roseman. The Stibbins murder of 1911 and other long-forgotten crimes once shocked the county, and visits by politicians and entertainers, including Buffalo Bill Cody, enthralled residents before quickly slipping from memory. Weather made history, too, such as the destructive hailstorm that pounded northern Knox County in 1907. With the help of rare photographs, local historian and Sun-Commercial columnist Brian Spangle brings to life these stories and more.

When Schererville was platted in 1866, founder and namesake Nicholas Scherer could not have imagined it becoming one of the “100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” That distinction was bestowed in 2007 by Money magazine. By then, its population had soared from 25 families to over 25,000 residents and surrounding areas had been incorporated. By its 2016 sesquicentennial, the expanding schools included a middle school, three elementary schools, and three private schools. As part of the Tri-Town area, Schererville students attend high school in St. John, where student enrollment now exceeds Schererville’s entire centennial population in 1966. Growth is partly attributed to the major highway routes often based on Indian trails crisscrossing the region. Over 900 businesses operate in Schererville today, bringing with them jobs, goods, services, and prosperity. Schererville’s humble beginnings and enduring title as “Crossroads of the Nation” are explained through this portrait of early settlers, government accomplishments, and the contributions of its citizens.

The closures of local stores, factories, schools, and movie theatres over the decades have left residents of Vincennes with only memories of what once was. Many fondly recall working at the Brown Shoe Factory, shopping at Gimbel-Bond, watching the latest movie at the Pantheon, or enjoying the rides at Uncle John's Kiddieland. Some significant buildings, such as the Pantheon, have survived and are now used for other purposes, but others have been razed, or otherwise destroyed, and disappeared with hardly a trace except for perhaps a historical marker. Collecting more than seventy period images, Sun-Commercial columnist Brian Spangle tells the story of these once thriving Vincennes landmarks that long ago passed from the scene.

Every summer in July, half a million people descend on downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, for the annual Three Rivers Festival. In 1968, Dean Phillips of the Fort Wayne Convention and Visitor Bureau came up with the idea of holding a community festival. With the support of Mayor Harold S. Zeis, Phillips, along with Paul Shaffer, Joan White, Bob Walda, Elston Ehrler, Tommy Manny, and Ruth Whearly, hosted a festival that promoted business and industry, celebrated Fort Wayne's culture and diversity, and helped revitalize the downtown area. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, the Three Rivers Festival remains Fort Wayne's largest summer celebration and is the second-largest festival in the state of Indiana!

Early restaurateurs made modest livings at mom-and-pop joints like Aunt Bea's Chicken in Noblesville and Brown's Drugstore in Carmel. Teen romances bloomed at the Blue Ribbon Dairy Drive-In and Burger Chef. Then Chef Dieter Puska's elegant eatery the Glass Chimney took dining to a whole new level. Local chefs carry on his legacy with new farm-to-table restaurants featuring ingredients from a multitude of growers and farmers' markets. Nearly one hundred distinct settlements existed in what we now call Delaware County. Some of these communities survived the ebb and flow of history to prosper, while others disappeared, becoming lost in the collective memory. Today, many residents would only recognize the city of Muncie and the towns of Albany, Daleville, Eaton, Gaston, Selma and Yorktown. A few might know of villages such as Desoto, New Burlington, Smithfield and Wheeling. Most have probably never heard of Dogtown, Gate's Corner, Granville and Soccum. Drawing on years of research, local historian Chris Flook uncovers the stories of these lost towns.

It is a cathedral to healthy minds and bodies, boldness and ingenuity, and cultural inclusiveness and the arts. This building's 19th-century founders would approve of the Athenaeum today--a multicultural center, throbbing with life, that unites a diverse community with its past and beckons a bright future. The structure looks the same as it did a century and a quarter ago and serves much the same purpose.
