Leavenworth, located in the central Cascades of Washington state, was once known as Icicle, and has been home to Native Americans, settlers, miners, railroad workers, and loggers. Railroad Depots of East Central Ohio

The hilly Alleghany Plateau of eastern Ohio was crossed by a number of primarily east-west rail lines heading toward Chicago, St. Louis, and ports on the Mississippi River during the latter part of the 19th century. These lines, eventually part of the Baltimore & Ohio, Erie, New York Central, Nickel Plate, and Pennsylvania systems, were joined by shorter lines extending from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, most notably the Wheeling & Lake Erie, designed to tap the coal and clay riches of the region. In order to serve the populace, railroad depots were needed. Smaller communities like Dalton and Dundee received typical combination depots designed to provide passenger, baggage, and freight accommodations. Separate passenger and freight depots were erected in larger communities, including Ashland and Canton. The arrival of the automobile brought a decline to local passenger service and a closing of depots. Some depots continued to serve the railroads in other ways and others were sold and moved from trackside, but many were demolished. Few remain today.

Henry Dove, of Virginia, was granted a quarter section (160 acres) of land in Canal Winchester, Ohio, around 1802 and moved his family there in 1811. Prior to his death, Dove divided his land equally between his two sons, Reuben and Jacob. In 1827, the Ohio and Erie Canal was routed through Reuben Dove's wheat field. After protesting the proposed canal route, Reuben threatened to sue the state. Canal workers suggested that Reuben plat a town and sell lots, and in 1828, Reuben--along with John Colman--did so. In 1761, when the Virginia General Assembly established the town of Strasburg, German-speaking people had already migrated from Pennsylvania to settle the Shenandoah Valley. Peter Stover chose a spot at the foot of Massanutten Mountain to lay out the streets for the new town. Since the Civil War, the peak of the mountain had been called Signal Knob and was the site of an aircraft beacon erected by the Federal Aviation Agency. Yreka Western Railroad

The city of Yreka was determined to have a railroad. When the Southern Pacific Railroad decided in 1883 to bypass Yreka, the citizens constructed their own railroad known as the Yreka Railroad Company. This railroad managed to eke out a living over the next few decades. In the 1930s, the railroad was reincorporated as the Yreka Western Railroad. By the mid-1930s, the railroad went bankrupt and was forced into receivership, and a new manager was put in charge. Through perseverance of the new manager, the railroad began to grow and prosper. By the late 1970s, the railroad once again started to decline, but as in the past, it managed to hold on. In 1986, the railroad started an excursion train known as the "Blue Goose," and steam locomotive No. 19 was added in 1989. Pikeville was founded in 1824 inside a bend in the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River at the foot of Peach Orchard Mountain. It was a river town for most of the 1800s with huge log rafts being floated downstream to the Ohio River and steamboats carrying people and goods back and forth. Three momentous events in Pikeville's history all occurred in 1889. The school that became the University of Pikeville opened, construction was completed on the Pike County Courthouse, and therein eight Hatfield combatants in the infamous Hatfield-McCoy Feud were convicted of murder. Located in the scenic Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania, America's third oldest amusement park, Idlewild, was founded in 1878 as a picnic ground along the Ligonier Valley Railroad. Its tranquil setting quickly established Idlewild as the premier place for church, school, and corporate picnics, as well as a recreational getaway for families. Idlewild added new amusements and facilities as its crowds continued to grow, but it always strove to maintain the picturesque landscape of the site. Soon a full-fledged amusement park was in operation, with throngs of visitors disembarking the trains from such places as Latrobe, Greensburg, and Pittsburgh.
