In World War II, Kane County's men performed on the war's biggest stages, aiding in Operation Torch, Operation Husky, and the invasion of Normandy. The women of Kane County also served overseas in both world wars as Red Cross nurses and WAVES, and domestically, they worked in factories, supporting in many vital ways.

Kevin J. Gaffney works for the Office of Chief Counsel, US Department of Veterans Affairs, and has served in the federal government in other agencies. The 1st Division Museum, Cantigny Park, and McCormick Research Center, along with many local historical centers, including in Aurora, Elgin, Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles, and the Camp Grant Museum, provided invaluable assistance in compiling this book.
