Title: New book showcases Butte's rich history

Author: Melanie Yuill

Publisher: KXLF-CBS Mountain News

Date: 12/9/09

A new book that is out this week features 127 pages of pictures depicting the history of Butte.

The book is called "Images of America Butte." Ellen Crain and Lee Whitney with the Butte-Silver Bow archives went through images from the archives and photos residents gave them to pick the final 200.

The women also had to research Butte to be able to describe all the photos in the book.

The research was the easy part, co-authors Lee Whitney and Ellen Crain said. The hard part, they said, was choosing which images would appear in the book. As the two combed through their collections they found more and more images, they said.

The chapters of the book are based on a 1905 Butte Evening News article by Thomas Rooney. The pictures were then selected to represent the four themes in the article.

The book is now on sale. Also for sale is set of 15 postcards. Copies can be purchased at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Butte Archives.
