The granite industry began on Cape Ann with the first sale of a piece of Rockport granite, for use as a millstone, to a farmer in Newburyport in 1800. Cape Ann was particularly well fitted for the pursuit of granite as its rocky hills and shores afforded a comparatively inexhaustible source of supply, and its splendid shipping facilities gave the advantage of quick and economical transportation to market by sea and land. The industry eventually declined, and by 1930, most quarries had gone out of business because of labor strikes and low demand. Today, most of these quarries are filled with rainwater and springwater, and many are used as reservoirs for the surrounding communities.

A college known as the Blendon Institute was formed in 1832. In 1842, the institute was given to the Presbyterian church to form the Central College of Ohio. However, due to financial struggles, the school--later known as Central College Academy--closed in 1894. The Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association purchased the defunct school property and created the Ohio Home for the Aged and Infirm Deaf; it was the first home of its kind in the state. The village of Central College filled with excitement when the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Delaware Railroad was slated to pass through town in 1873. Pierre Part and the shores of Belle River were inhabited by Acadian French-speaking people. They learned from their ancestors how to live off the land, and if more was harvested or hunted than their families could eat, they gave the extra food to their neighbors. There, each family resided in a small house, or a cabin'eau in French. It was typically a one-room structure with stakes (pier), walls (bar d'eau), and a shingle roof. Located at one end of the house, a fireplace was made of timber held together with mud and moss. Commonly, the home's frame was constructed of cypress boards, but some people also included cane reeds, palmetto, and shorter cypress boards to make the structure stronger. Some families would relocate from Bayou Lafourche to the swamps of the beautiful Belle River, where they had family or knew someone so that they could trap. When trapping season was over, they would return to their settlement.
