Regular price $24.99 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 248): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Formed in 1820, Phillips County was named for Sylvanus Phillips, an early settler; Helena, the county seat, was named for Phillip's daughter and was incorporated in 1833.
Helena was a major river town and was the economic and social center of the region. Lumber mills, cotton-oil mills, railroads, and river traffic contributed to a thriving economy. Helena's various ethnic groups played an important role in society and commerce, including African Americans, Chinese, Lebanese, Greek, Italian, and others. Situated on the Mississippi River and the southern tip of Crowley's Ridge, Helena's history includes Hernando de Soto, Jacques Marquette, and seven confederate generals. The rich alluvial soil along the river attracted wealthy planters who transformed the forests into productive plantations and luxurious homes. In more recent years, Phillips County has suffered the loss of jobs and a declining population, resulting in a struggling economy.

The name lingered on the tongues of residents long after their home was renamed and the advent of railroads opened up the region once enclosed by rivers and lakes. As rugged farmhouses dotted the plains and Puritan spires rose above the trees, the sleepy Tyot blossomed into the bustling community of Norwood. Decades later, journalist Win Everett preserved Norwood's colorful history in his column "Tales of Tyot." With stories of haunted taverns and superstitious soldiers, influenza and the industrial age, Everett profiles the fascinating people who left their marks on the pages of Norwood history. Available for the first time in a single volume, these articles bring three centuries of history to life through the artful voice of Norwood's beloved storyteller.

Like many before him in the Bluegrass State, Michael Blowen, a former Boston Globeentertainment writer, fell in love with horses, specifically Thoroughbreds. The reality beyond the racetracks, he knew, was that each day a Thoroughbred was in the spotlight, for some of these distinguished athletes, their days were numbered.
For that reason, he dreamed of finding a way to give them a dignified retirement after they completed their rigorous racing careers. When he opened the Thoroughbred retirement farm Old Friendsin Kentucky in 2003, he never dreamed his idea would grow so big, so fast. Today, Old Friendsis home to more than 130 horses, many of them stallions, as well as geldings, mares and one loveable miniature horse named Little Silver Charm.
Join journalist and horse lover Rick Capone for the story of Old Friendsand the horses that call the farm home.

Massachusetts was at the center of the national struggle for women's rights. Long before the Civil War, Lucy Stone and other Massachusetts abolitionists opposed women's exclusion from political life. They launched the organized movement at the first National Woman's Rights Convention, held in Worcester. After the war, state activists founded the Boston-based American Woman Suffrage Association and Woman's Journal to lead campaigns across the country. Their activities laid the foundation for the next generation of suffragists to triumph over tradition. Author Barbara Berenson gives these revolutionary reformers the attention they deserve in this compelling and engaging story.

From dogwoods to doughboys, county fairs to the coming of the railroad, this collection of Jessie Havens's "Hindsight" columns is a patchwork quilt of historical vignettes that provides detailed insight into the local color that gives life to a town.

Like most bayfront villages, the bountiful resources and majestic landscape of this area that once sustained watermen and sportsmen alike have been depleted as over-harvesting, poaching, pollution and continued development have taken their toll, threatening the very legacy of its people. J.H. Hall's family first settled on this land shortly after the Civil War, where they maintained a tradition of farming, fishing and crabbing throughout the twentieth century. Hall's words flow as splendidly as the tides in this collection of personal reminisces and local and natural history celebrating the lives of the watermen before him and the uncertainty surrounding those today.

Regular price $24.99 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 248): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Cheshire was established by farmers in 1694 as a parish of neighboring Wallingford. It is a classic New England town, built around a central green, graced by a white church with a tall, weather vane-topped, sentinel spire.
Surrounded by some of the state's main highways of today, the town's location and people have shaped the long and rich history of this proud Connecticut community. Cheshire chronicles the growth of a small, Colonial farm town through the early twentieth century. The book is an album of its prominent citizens and families and of its noteworthy sites and events. Stories from two hundred years of its history come to life on its pages. They include the passage of the Amistad captives through Lock 12 on their way to stand trial in Hartford, the tale of the wandering Leatherman, and rumors of gold buried in the center of town. The book's centerpiece is a collection of the works of E.W. Hazard, early lensman, featuring his photography of Cheshire's parades, celebrations, and streetscapes, some seen here for the first time in print, in what may be the largest assemblage of his craft in one publication.

Oak Bluffs, originally incorporated in 1880 as Cottage City, is located on the northeast shore of Martha's Vineyard. Oak Bluffs: The Cottage City Years on Martha's Vineyard traces this historically significant town from its early years as the site of a renowned religious camp meeting to its incorporation as Cottage City and later as Oak Bluffs. Using historic images, it captures the religious and social spirit of the community and the fun times of promenading on the bluffs, bathing at the beach, playing croquet, and celebrating with parades and illuminations. This book evokes memories of a bygone era: the canvas Tabernacle and tents in Wesleyan Grove, the Sea View House and Martha's Vineyard Railroad in Oak Bluffs, the horse-drawn trolley, and the Martha's Vineyard Summer Institute in the Vineyard Highlands. Also captured is the remarkable preservation of Oak Bluffs, as seen in early photographs of its parks, cottages, and buildings, such as the Tabernacle, Union Chapel, and Arcade.

""I've always believed that New Concord and Muskingum College are the center of the universe, because if you get your start here, you can go anywhere."" This quote from John Herschel Glenn Jr. is the perfect summation of a wonderfully Midwestern town that produced one of the great American citizens of all time. The Village of New Concord, founded in 1828, had humble enough beginnings. Over the course of the next century and a half, however, the growth of the entire country was played out on New Concord's stage as residents faced a series of revolutionary frontiers: Zane's Trace, the National Road, U.S. Route 40, Interstate 70, and finally, space. New Concord, like the rest of the country, struggled through two world wars, the Great Depression, and social turmoil. Unlike the rest of the country, it also produced a hero.
