Regular price $24.99 Sale price $12.50 Save 50%Through a side by side comparison of historic and modern photographs, Ryan Lee Price illustrates the evolution of Glendora from a quaint town known for its abundant citrus groves to the beloved suburban community it is today, affectionately called "The Pride of the Foothills'? by locals.
On April 1, 1887, the first lot in Glendora was sold, and in the years since, sage and oak trees gave way to farms and orange trees. Acres of citrus trees soon yielded to rows of houses, and what is left of the orchards of yesteryear are small backyard orange groves, century-old farmhouses, and memories of the people who made Glendora their home. Although Glendora has evolved from a dusty village into a city, it is still a small town with plenty of history. Ryan Lee Price spent his formative years growing up in Glendora, and no matter where he lives, he considers it his hometown.

In June 1748, 80 members Nentego tribe, from whom the name "Nanticoke'? is derived, grounded their canoes in the wilderness along the Susquehanna River in the area that would later be named the Wyoming Valley. While it was first a farming area, towns sprouted alongside the nearby Nanticoke Creek, but when coal was discovered, the first coal mine was in operation by 1825, and thus a new industry was born for this tiny town. Nanticoke owes its chief growth to the anthracite coal industry, which provided employment opportunities for thousands of European immigrants. Through their labor and strong work ethic, they established a superb city in which to live a full life, and left behind a magnificent history of their times.

The Seeing Eye traces its origin to the trenches and battlefields of World War I, where legions of soldiers were blinded during years of brutal engagements. After the war, Germany trained dogs to guide its blinded veterans. In the late 1920s, a small group of innovators took it upon themselves to teach blind and visually impaired people in North America to use dog guides. The Seeing Eye has since helped thousands to achieve greater independence, dignity, and self-confidence, using specially trained Seeing Eye dogs as their companions.
Using rare photographs and documents, The Seeing Eyedetails this remarkable organization and its pioneers, including German shepherd breeder and Seeing Eye founder Dorothy Harrison Eustis; Morris Frank, the first visually impaired American to learn to use a Seeing Eye dog; and Frank's own dog, Buddy. The story follows the first students as they navigate the busy streets of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1929, and Morris County, New Jersey, where the fledgling organization moved in 1931 and where it continues to operate today. The Seeing Eyedocuments the campuses and the students, as well as the faithful dogs, their care, and their training. The reader will meet the dedicated employees and volunteers who have made the organization possible, as well as the graduates who have gone on to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

Two months later, he was elected in the largest landslide in state history to the first of two terms as Maryland's 57th governor.
In contrast to the rampant political partisanship and governmental paralysis so common today, Harry Roe Hughes took a workmanlike approach to public service, more interested in results than personal advancement. His record--major tax and education reform, protection of the Chesapeake Bay and more--is one of lasting significance to all Marylanders. He respected the policy-making role of the General Assembly and governed through consensus. He eschewed the political. His style reflected his personality and approach to life: decent, honest, efficient, low-key and businesslike.
Elected in an era of political scandal, Harry Roe Hughes restored Maryland's reputation for integrity and good government--an approach that, sadly, seems quaint and old-fashioned by today's standards.

Ranked among the 50 most populous counties in the nation and one of the top 10 wealthiest counties, Montgomery also boasts the most educated workforce in the United States, with nearly 30 percent of adults over the age of 25 holding a postgraduate degree. Through the juxtaposition of old and new photographs, noted author and historian Mark Walston chronicles the progression of Maryland life in all its variety, offering historical insights into how modern Montgomery came to be.
