Troy, New York has earned some distinctive titles in its more than 200 years of existence. ""The Home of Uncle Sam,"" ""The Collar City,"" and the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, Troy has a colorful and engaging history. The city's rich human and industrial legacy is explored in this unprecedented pictorial collection. Troy celebrates the city where 19-year-old Kate Mullaney, an Irish Immigrant, organized 200 women for the first all-female labor union (Collar Laundry Union) more than a century ago. It is where Bessemer Steel was first poured in America, and where the plates for the ironclad ship, the Monitor, were manufactured--an event that lead to a turning point for the North during the Civil War. Troy was the home of Samuel Wilson, who packed beef for the U. S. Army during the War of 1812, and where the famous trademark U. S. , better known as Uncle Sam, originated. The premier cast-iron stove manufacturing center during the early 19th century, Troy was responsible for heating homes around the world. It earned the reputation of ""The Collar City"" when, at one time, 15,000 workers produced more than $40 million worth of collars, cuffs, and shirts per year. With more than 200 photographs, most of which come from the rich archives of the Rensselaer County Historical Society, Troy spans much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Rail transportation, faster and more efficient than other methods of the era, opened new markets for the products of North Carolina's farms, factories, and mines. Over the years, North Carolina rail companies have ranged in size from well-engineered giants like the Southern Railway to temporary logging railroads like the Hemlock. Cross ties and rails were laid across almost every conceivable terrain: tidal marshes, sand hills, rolling piedmont, and mountain grades. Vulnerable to the turbulent and unregulated economies of the day, few railroad companies escaped reorganizations and receiverships during their corporate lives, often leaving tangled and contradictory histories in their passing.

Ponce de Leon is reputed to have entered the inlet now named for him at New Smyrna Beach during his first Florida exploration in 1513. Jonathan Dickenson crossed the inlet to safety with the Spanish in 1696, and Dr. Andrew Turnbull created his short-lived New Smyrna settlement in 1768. Later pirates and plunderers entered through the inlet and wreaked havoc, and American Indian chief Wildcat terrorized the area. Federal navy cannonading destroyed the community in 1863, and the freezes of 1895 and 1896 decimated the orange groves. The people of New Smyrna persevered through it all to make New Smyrna the charming community it is today. This book offers a wide view of this history, mostly through images from the family archives of Zelia Mary Wilson Sweett.

Regular price $24.99 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 248): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Churches, schools, ballparks, old neighborhood streets and more all come back to life in the pages of South Bronx!
It was once part of Westchester County, but the Bronx was annexed to New York City in the 19th century. The South Bronx came to be defined as the area in the southwest part of the borough between the Harlem River and the Bronx River, with Fordham Road generally considered as the northern boundary. Less urban than nearby neighborhoods in Manhattan, the South Bronx attracted countless numbers of immigrants arriving in New York City in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Choosing to raise their families in what was then a country setting, they helped to make the South Bronx one of the most culturally diverse sections of New York.
South Bronx revisits the Third Avenue trolley, Old West Farms, the Third Avenue El, tar beach, and the cobblestone roadways of a bygone era. The breweries and old-time taverns that were once such a vital part of the culture of the South Bronx are also found anew, in addition to The Schnorer Club, the Elks Club on the Concourse, the Concourse Plaza Hotel, and legendary Yankee Stadium.
