Manistee County
9781467106603
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $12.50 Save 50%Through a carefully-curated selection postcards, author Emma Wolf takes the reader through the bygone days of Manistee County, full of lumber barons, streetcars, steamships, and charming images of daily life in this coastal Michigan community.
The name "Manistee'? comes from the Ojibwa who lived in the region. Some believe it means "Spirit of the Woods'?--and that seems fitting. The abundance of towering white pine trees attracted John Stronach to build the first sawmill in the area in 1841. A thriving lumber town rose up along the river. A fire destroyed much of the town in 1871, and wealthy lumber barons decided to rebuild the town out of brick; those structures still line River Street today. The Manistee streets are quieter now than they were in the town's heyday, but the Victorian charm and over a century of remarkable history remain. Drawing from the postcards of lifelong collectors and information from residents whose families have lived in the town for generations, Emma Wolf and the Musculus family bring the unique history of Manistee County to life.

Jackson abolitionists used their barns, houses and hidden compartments to harbor freedom seekers traveling on the Underground Railroad. One even repelled an armed posse from Kentucky. A prominent druggist murdered his mother in 1889 and a jail guard in 1893.Evidence suggests he murdered his father too. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt traveled to Brown's Lake for relaxation in 1935, but a media mob had other plans. A popular Blackman Township roadhouse has a longstanding tradition of entertaining pioneers, stagecoach drivers and mobsters, but its secret guests are even stranger.
Join local historian Linda Hass as she delves into these and other entertaining and often-overlooked stories.

The Illinois Rail Splitter's influence can be felt across the Land of Lincoln, but his relationship with Chicago was pivotal in his journey to the national stage. Lincoln first came to Chicago in 1847, a year before the Illinois-Michigan Canal opened and brought spectacular wealth to the region. The Midwestern metropolis is where Lincoln would meet the backers that ultimately propelled him into the White House. Tens of thousands of Chicagoans viewed his coffin at its last stop before its final destination in Springfield. John Toman and Michael Frutig explore how the people of Chicago managed to get their man into power on the eve of the greatest crisis the nation had ever faced.

Riding twice the distance of Paul Revere and under more dire circumstances, her heroic efforts helped position the Continental army in subsequent battles. A widow at a young age, Sybil became a successful businesswoman in a male-dominated profession and lived in the region for her remaining years. Through family documents and correspondence, author Vincent T. Dacquino charts the incredible life and legacy of Sybil Ludington.

The town of Cumberland seceded from North Yarmouth in 1821, one year after Maine's secession from Massachusetts. Farming, fishing, shipbuilding, and the carrying trade formed the foundation of the local economy, and Cumberland's population increased during the period leading up to the Civil War. The industries sustaining coastal Maine underwent dramatic changes during the second half of the 19th century. New opportunities were sought by the community, with chickens and carnations being two of the novel agricultural products that helped the town survive a 35 percent decline in population between 1860 and 1920. Cumberland's proximity to the state's largest city created prospects for residents in shipbuilding and other industries in Greater Portland during World War II, and the postwar years saw a gradual transformation of the town into a bedroom community. Today, Cumberland has a school system known for excellence and attracts residents to a rural landscape in close proximity to the amenities and opportunities of the city. The Cumberland Historical Society (CHS) was founded in 1939 by a group of citizens interested in preserving the history of the town. Carolyn Small, CHS curator and former president, worked for 35 years in the local school system. Thomas C. Bennett is the director of Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland and has a graduate degree in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine.
