In January 1820, the acting governor of Kentucky, Gabriel Slaughter, signed a bill put before him by the state's legislature to create a new county from portions of Christian and Caldwell Counties in Western Kentucky.

Trigg County was named to honor Revolutionary Warsoldier and Native American fighter Col. Stephen Trigg. Organization of the county government commenced on May 15, 1820, at the home of Samuel Orr in the community of Warrenton. Justices of the Peace Boyd, Wadlington, Goode, Orr, Scott, Slaughter, Daniel, Fowler, and Dawson swore one another into office and set about the business of the new county. The village of Cadiz, located along the banks of Little River, was soon established as the county seat.

Author Thomas D. Harper is a native of Trigg County and possesses a passionate interest in the county's history. Dayton's history has been shaped and reshaped by its location on the banks of the Ohio River. First settled in 1848, the city grew and prospered, providing raw materials and labor for the boatbuilders across the river in Cincinnati. The fine white-sand beaches became a tourist mecca, drawing the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) reunion in 1898. Floods, pollution, and a series of locks for river navigation destroyed the beaches, but Dayton continued to thrive. The Great Flood of 1937 devastated nearly half of the town, and time rendered many of its businesses obsolete. Bowed but unbeaten, Dayton struggled to recover. Images of America: Garrard County in World War II depicts the citizens of a small, rural central Kentucky county who served their nation in war-torn areas worldwide and on the home front. Images courtesy of veterans and their families show the sacrifices made and honor those who served. With photographs of all branches of the armed services, the county's war story is told in representative vignettes at numerous fronts. Through interviews, news accounts, and letters, many veterans' stories of courage, humor, and despair come to life. Here at home, patriotic efforts began in 1940 when school children made "bundles for Britain" and continued throughout the war years with residents sacrificing at home to spend every available dime on war bonds. In fact, in 1943, Garrard Countians bought more bonds per capita than citizens in any other Kentucky county. To reward their patriotism and sacrifice, in March 1945, the government commissioned the USS Garrard, an attack transport ship. A member of the crew donated to the county's historical society photos of the ship and his diary. Survivors of the USS Garrard held a reunion here in 2002.
