Ansley Park, the first suburb built on the north side of Atlanta, has been the residence of many of the city's most prominent citizens. Images of America: Ansley Park is a pictorial history of this beautiful and unique suburb and its surrounding area. In addition to containing details about former residents of selected houses in the area, it also includes brief histories of the Civil War in Atlanta; First Church of Christ, Scientist; First Presbyterian Church; The Temple; Peachtree Christian Church; the 12 governors that lived in the Ansley Park governor's mansion; Piedmont Park; Spring Street School; Woodberry School for Girls; Margaret Mitchell; Dorothy Alexander; Amos Rhodes; and four social organizations, the Piedmont Driving Club, Ansley Golf Club, and two chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Dublin, Georgia, was transformed from a violent and lawless community into one of the state's fastest growing, most prosperous and cultivated cities. Although the town's Golden Era came to an untimely end with the invasion of the boll weevil, the influenza epidemic of 1918, and the devastation of lives lost during the First World War, Dublin is still a spirited community, growing and changing with the times while reflecting upon a colorful history.

Located where the Altamaha River empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Brunswick, Hofwyl-Broadfield was the last of the coastal plantations to grow rice.

With welcoming views of the broad and expansive marsh, oak trees draped with moss, and a huge sky overhead, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation was home to five generations of one family. Its story involves a love of the land--fertile yet sometimes unyielding, binding to it the people who owned it and those who worked it. It was this legacy that Ophelia Dent bequeathed to the State of Georgia at her death in 1973. Nestled in the heart of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, Union County is a unique blend of modern America that maintains the charm of the legendary Appalachian era, a developing community surrounded by pristine forests, a land of scenic beauty, and friendly people. Pierce County, Georgia was founded in 1857, honoring the fourteenth President of the United States, Franklin Pierce. Blackshear, which became the county seat, was founded in 1859 and named after David Blackshear, an American Revolutionary soldier, brigadier general of the Creek Indian War, and later Georgia politician. Shortly after the establishment of the county and its seat, the tenacity of its residents was tested against the horrors and hardships of the Civil War.

The men of Pierce County faced with both bravery and uncertainty the greatest challenge of their lives, while the women and children they left behind toiled to sustain the community, with the hope that their loved ones would return. After the war, Pierce County families joined together to re-build their community, which was nearly destroyed in its infancy. The late nineteenth century brought growth and change, as a determined citizenry built new homes, churches, and schools to nourish and educate its young. From the abundant green pines and beautiful white sands of Southeast Georgia arose enterprising businesses and a successful agricultural economy. Residents of the county kept their eyes toward the future while always honoring and remembering the sons and daughters they lost through the ages. The proud faces of generations past and the tangible results of their pioneering efforts to build a home fill the pages of this treasured volume.

Hawkinsville lies along the banks of the Ocmulgee River in the heart of Georgia's wiregrass country. Surrounded by some of the state's most fertile cotton lands, the city became an important commercial center soon after its incorporation in 1836. By the eve of the Civil War, Hawkinsville boasted stately mansions, mercantile firms, gins, rail service, and a river port for the transportation of cotton. Although the Civil War took its toll, the city flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century. The revival of the cotton trade, together with the growing demand for the region's lumber and turpentine, boosted the city's economy and population. Newcomers from the North joined hands with long-established families to found banks, schools, hotels, churches, cotton mills, steamboat and railroad companies, and even a harness-racing track. Hawkinsville was hailed as Georgia's "Queen City of the Wiregrass."

Lowndes County, located deep in the wiregrass region of southern Georgia, has been continuously occupied since ancient times. Through the centuries, various Native American tribes inhabited the region, but they lingered relatively briefly and left few tangible traces. The area's written history began with the establishment around 1623 of the Spanish mission of Santa Cruz de Cachipile in southern Lowndes. Georgia's general assembly created Lowndes County from the southern half of Irwin County in 1825 and named it for William Jones Lowndes of South Carolina. The present county seat, Valdosta, dates from the construction of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad across Lowndes from 1859 to 1860. Ultimately the county was to have five railroads, which, combined with U.S. Highways 41 and 84 and Interstate 75, were to be major factors in dramatic local growth."

In December 1857, a bill passed in the Georgia State Senate that carved out everything in Baker County to the east of the Flint River into a new county called Mitchell. It was to be named after Gen. Henry Mitchell, who had served valiantly in the Revolutionary War and had continued his public service as a leader in the Georgia legislature for many years. David West, a local resident, provided 50 acres at the center of the new territory for the organization of a new county seat and the construction of a new courthouse and other public buildings. In fewer than 12 months, construction was underway, and the town of Camilla had been incorporated. It was named after Camilla Mitchell, the 19-year-old granddaughter of General Mitchell.

The area that would become modern Glennville was first opened to settlement in 1773. In the early decades of the 19th century, settlers converged around the intersection of Hencart Road and Reidsville-Johnston's Station Road. The community that grew around this intersection came to be known as Philadelphia--a name it would hold until 1889, when the village's first post office was established. The village was then renamed after a prominent schoolteacher and minister, Glenn Thompson, who was instrumental in securing the post office for the village. Glennville was incorporated as a town in 1894 and continued to grow remarkably through the coming decades until it became the commercial and agricultural hub of Tattnall County.
