The architectural development of Georgia Tech began as a core of Victorian-era buildings sited around a campus green and Tech Tower. During the subsequent Beaux-Arts era, designers (who were also members of the architecture faculty) added traditionally styled buildings, with many of them in a pseudo-Jacobean collegiate redbrick style. Early Modernist Paul Heffernan led an architectural revolution in his academic village of functionalist buildings on campus--an aesthetic that inspired additional International Style campus buildings. Formalist, Brutalist, and Post-Modern architecture followed, and when Georgia Tech was selected as the Olympic Village for the 1996 Summer Olympics, new residence halls were added to the campus. Between 1994 and 2008, Georgia Tech president G. Wayne Clough stewarded over $1 billion in capital improvements at the school, notably engaging midtown Atlanta with the development of Technology Square. The landscape design by recent campus planners is especially noteworthy, featuring a purposeful designation of open spaces, accommodations for pedestrian perambulations, and public art. What might have developed into a prosaic assemblage of academic and research buildings has instead evolved into a remarkably competent assemblage of aesthetically pleasing architecture.

Princeton is only the fourth American college to celebrate a 275th anniversary.

Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, it has long Presbyterian roots. The scene of notable events in the American Revolution, it was a classical college for another century. Then, at its 1896 sesquicentennial, it became Princeton University and in succeeding decades developed into a world-leading research university. Long an institution of males of European descent, its gender and ethnic makeup has changed dramatically in the last half-century. Today's Princeton combines a robust collegiate culture with a research profile near the top of international league tables--truly a rare combination.

Author W. Bruce Leslie is a New Jersey native and a 1966 alumnus of Princeton University. As the grandson of a Scottish immigrant, studying at an institution with deep Scottish roots was a natural path. The author fell in love with liberal education thanks to Princeton's wonderful faculty and fellow students. Inspired by them, he taught history for a half-century at the State University of New York at Brockport, seeking to bestow a similar affection for learning, especially about the past, on his students. Returning to his roots in retirement, he is rediscovering the richness of this cultural and intellectual community.

The Little Greenbrier School is located off Wears Cove Road in the northern section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is one of four buildings remaining in this historic area and one of two schoolhouses remaining in the park. Having been built in 1881, it served not only as the local school but also as the local church of the Primitive Baptist faith. It is still in use today, not for regular school but for special programs, tours, and church activities. The school has gone through several phases--school, church, park use for programs, homecomings for the local families, and singing schools. Despite being 140 years old and counting, this landmark and other nearby buildings continue to draw thousands of first-time and repeat visitors yearly.

The University of Rhode Island is an in-depth pictorial history of URI that covers the period
beginning with its inception as a college in 1892 to the term of its current president. Settled in the rural village of Kingston, where a rolling hillside
has evolved into a vast world-class educational institution, URI began as the Rhode Island Agricultural School in 1889. The Chautauqua Institution, located on Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State, is both a cloistered community and a world-renowned educational establishment. Founded in 1874 as a summer camp for Methodist Sunday school teachers, Chautauqua is synonymous with the ideas of spiritual growth, educational study, and intellectual stimulation in conjunction with recreation in an outdoor setting. For over 125 years, Chautauqua has remained an educational and cultural mecca for the common man. Chautauqua Institution, 1874-1974 is a compendium of Chautauqua's growth from its inception at Fair Point to its centennial celebrations. Elbert Hubbard and his Roycrofters were one of the most influential aspects of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Hubbard founded the Roycroft Press in 1895, and by the turn of the century, the varied and eclectic group of artisans and celebrities who flocked here had transformed the small town of East Aurora, New York, into a world-renowned utopian crafts community. In this volume of over 200 images, you will experience the Roycroft campus as never before, viewing rare images of the people who made the Roycroft dream a reality. After an extensive restoration following the community's centennial in 1995, the Roycroft Inn has reopened, and the area has once again become an artistic and, now, historic mecca for visitors from all over the world.

In 1979, a small art college with 71 students opened its doors in a renovated 19th-century building in the urban heart of colonial Savannah, Georgia. One of the most historic cities on the eastern seaboard, Savannah is noted for its architectural treasures, urban forest and verdant squares, and for the unique 1733 city plan designed by General Oglethorpe. The campus fabric of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) grew from the Romanesque revival Savannah Volunteer Guards Armory, designed by Boston architect William Gibbons Preston in 1892, to comprise some 60 rehabilitated historic structures situated within four historic districts. Currently, more than 6,200 students pursue their dreams in this wonderful setting.

A mix of cultures unique to any space in North America funneled into the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area after Spanish invaders stumbled in through the south in 1506. For centuries, indigenous Americans had established ways of knowing and transmitting learning to their young, but colliding old and new cultures left the area's learning communities irrevocably changed. Subsequently, other native tribes and more European, South American, and Asian cultures proudly ported their perceived best practices concerning educating youth into the area. In 1880, the railroad, bolstered by powerful Anglo economic forces, blasted into Albuquerque, carrying new cultures clinging to the railcars: Greeks, Italians, Germans, Jews of many heritages, English, Easterners, Southerners, a host of cowboys, farmers, merchants, and more--all shadowed by motivated politicians. The founding, unfolding, and evolution of educational systems in Albuquerque weaves a crazy-quilt story regarding public, private, and parochial schooling--as well as regrettably ill-founded systems that wronged natives.

For the past 40 years, the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) has been on the forefront of advocacy to improve opportunity in higher education for US persons of Mexican origin. Chicano faculty at the University of Texas, together with a few Chicano students, organized the group's first gatherings in 1974, and since then, TACHE has held thematic annual conferences that signal its mission and program focus and allow professional networking. Chicano faculty and students in colleges and universities have increased, but much still remains to be done. Although funding for education is drastically being cut, Chicano and Latino students are at the front door of higher education, and the number of college-ready students is reaching significant levels across the nation. The official designation of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), for schools with Chicano and Latino student enrollment in excess of 25 percent, has become a badge of honor among colleges and universities.

Containing some of the most fertile soil in the world, the Arkansas Delta is predominantly an agricultural region. In the early 19th century, however, while the land remained extremely rich, the Delta's inhabitants were suffering from severe poverty. Showcased here in over 200 vintage images with corresponding commentary are the historic efforts in the education of the Delta for the past 150 years, documenting the region's rise in national education standards.

Settled in part by the Native American tribes of the Mississippi Delta and later French explorers, the area was always an agricultural gold-mine. As seen in many farm reliant communities, education fell second to tilling the fields. As the rest of the world began its rapid ascension from agriculture to industrialization, the farmers of the Delta, poor and uneducated, were left behind the rest of the nation. This new book, featuring remarkable images of the one-room schoolhouses, teachers, and students of the many communities of the Delta, spans over two centuries, as the authors trace the history of education in the Arkansas Delta from its roots in the mid-19th century to its current state in the dawn of the 21st century.

Located in the mountains of North Carolina, Black Mountain College was founded in 1933 by John Andrew Rice, Theodore Dreier, and other former faculty members from Rollins College. Their mission was to provide a liberal arts education that developed the student as a whole. Students and faculty lived and worked together on campus. Grades were abolished, and the arts were central to education. The college rented space for their first campus at Blue Ridge Assembly. In 1941, the college moved to the Lake Eden property they had purchased across the valley, allowing the school to grow. Many refugee artists found a home there, which provided an open and safe environment to create. Among the famous faculty and students of the college were Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Buckminster Fuller. Funding for the college was always scarce, and in debt, the college was finally forced to close its doors in 1957. Black Mountain College operated for only 24 years but left a lasting impact on the arts and education on an international scale.

Nestled in the Portneuf Gap where the Snake River Plain meets the Rocky Mountains, Pocatello is a regional economic, transportation, and education hub in Southeast Idaho. The Idaho State Journal and its predecessor, the Pocatello Tribune, have been covering events and capturing the spirit of the people in and around Pocatello since 1890. Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast's Camp Alice Chester (CAC) on picturesque Booth Lake first opened its doors in 1924 after a successful fundraising effort led by Alice Chester, the first president of the Milwaukee Girl Scouts. Thousands have walked its well-worn trails, cooked over campfires, and slept in the tents and cabins. Swimming and boating activities have consistently been a major appeal for campers. The historic European-style lodge has provided a gathering place for community meals, folk dancing, dramatics, arts and crafts, and ceremonies through the decades. CAC is a unique setting where skills and confidence are strengthened and lasting friendships are formed. Since the fall of 1980, CAC has also been known as Alice Chester Center (ACC). The name change brought expanded year-round, staff-led opportunities for Girl Scouts and others to utilize it during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Today, the accredited property encompasses 333 acres and features frontage on two lakes.

Helping orphaned and disadvantaged boys get a chance at a better life was the mission of Brother James, founder of the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, a German Catholic Order that sent Brothers to the United States in 1924. To that end, St. James Trade School was established in Springfield, Illinois, in 1928. Two years later, the first group of apprentices was admitted; they and hundreds who followed them through 1972 went on to become certified mechanics, carpenters, and electricians among other valuable trades. High school diplomas were earned beginning in 1948. In 1975, Brother James Court (BJC) opened with a brand new building specifically designed as a residential intermediate care facility. BJC provides both residency and advocacy for developmentally disabled men. Providing the highest quality care, consistent with the spirit and principles of the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, programs at BJC meet residents' needs and allow them to live happily at BJC for as long as they need.
