The town of Stoddard, located in the Monadnock Region of southwest New Hampshire, is blessed with a handsomely severe landscape of forests, lakes, and hills admired for their natural beauty. Hundreds of farm families settled in the town between 1768 and 1820. When the rock-laden and thin-soiled farms failed in the mid-1800s, the town turned to industry to survive. Belmont, originally the upper parish of Gilmanton, was laid out by proprietors in 1765. The first settlers began arriving before the beginning of the American Revolution. It was not until 1790 that Belmont Village was settled, when Joseph Fellows built the first sawmill and gristmill. Shortly thereafter, a store, blacksmith shop, and post office became the nucleus around which the village of Fellows Mills developed. In 1825, William Badger, who later became governor of New Hampshire, acquired the mills. In 1832, Badger was instrumental in building the brick cotton mill, which is today's Belmont Mill. Originally, the neighborhood now known as Lakeport was part
of Meredith on one side of the Winnipesaukee River and of
Gilmanton (Gilford after 1812) on the other. This manufacturing,
commercial, and port settlement--once called Lake Village--became
part of the city in Laconia in 1893. The area around today's Lakeport
Dam became the site of sawmills and gristmills for the Euro-American
settlers of the late 1760s. By the mid-1800s, textile and hosiery mills,
factories, foundries, and machine shops had grown up around the
abundant waterpower of the dam.
With the coming of the railroad in 1848, Lake Village became
an important railroad town--with repair shops, a roadhouse, and

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, up to forty trains a day brought visitors anxious to experience the tremendous natural beauty of the area: the cold, clear streams; the towering, snow-clad mountains; and the mysterious wooded valleys cast a spell over all of those lucky enough to visit the Jackson area.
