"At this time when we are in the process of choosing national, state and local leaders, it was interesting to read about our state's very first governor, a man who deserves to be remembered.
A new biography of the Tar Heel State's first governor, Richard Caswell, has just been published by The History Press. If asked, I doubt many people in our state know much about Gov. Caswell (1729-1789). Perhaps some people who have traveled in the part of our state that borders Virginia might know there is a Caswell County.
This is a shame, as Mr. Caswell was an important man in our state's history. Joe A. Mobley, who teaches North Carolina history at N. C. State and who has worked with the state department of archives and history, has taken upon himself the task of making us more aware of this man's accomplishments in a 144-page book, 'North Carolina's Governor Richard Caswell: Founding Father and Revolutionary Hero.'"
