With the completion of the Queen and Crescent Railroad (now the Norfolk Southern), the population of the cities grew. Developers from Cincinnati and Covington came to Erlanger and Elsmere, called South Erlanger, and formed the Erlanger and the Woodside Land Syndicates in the 1880s. Title: Gift certificates available for new Arcadia book

Author: Jason Brubaker

Publisher: Community Press

Date: 11/30/09

Erlanger and Elsmere residents will have to wait just a bit longer to get their piece of history.

The new Arcadia-published "Images of America: Elsmere and Erlanger" book, which was originally slated to be released around Christmas, is now set to be out in late January. The book, a partnership between the Erlanger Historical Society and the Elsmere Historical Society, tells the history of both cities through hundreds of old photographs and stories.

"We saw an early edition, and I was incredibly pleased," said Pat Hahn, a member of the Erlanger Historical Society. "We're just so excited for it to finally get here, because I think people are really going to enjoy it."

However, even though the book won't be available for two months, that doesn't mean residents can't get a head start. Hahn said they have been passing out gift certificates to local churches and businesses, allowing residents to reserve their copy of the book.

"When we found out we weren't going to have this in time for people to give as a Christmas present, we wanted to do something to keep it fresh in people's minds," she explained. "So we started putting these gift certificates out instead, and we've gotten a great response from people who are excited about seeing the book come out."

In addition to being available at most area churches, Hahn said residents can also swing by the Erlanger Train Depot to pick up a gift certificate to reserve their copy of the book. The Depot will be open from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20, and residents can pay with cash or check.

The book will be $21.99.

Hahn also said that once the book hits the shelves, they're also planning a number of special activities, including various book signings and celebrations which will likely be held in early February.

"There has been a lot of work that has gone into this book from a lot of people, so we hope to see all of the residents pick up a copy," she said. "We think this will be something the residents of Erlanger and Elsmere can be proud of."

This book was created through the collaboration of the Erlanger Historical Society and the newly formed Elsmere Historical Society. The members of both groups solicited photographs from a number of sources, including community members, to document the history of both towns. Through the efforts of the citizens of Elsmere and Erlanger who took the time to donate their photographs, this book becomes a testament to the power of working together for a common goal.
