DeKalb was originally known as Huntley's Grove, named after Russell Huntley, an early settler who was one of its founders. The area had also been known as Buena Vista and DeKalb Center, before settling on the name DeKalb in 1881. The name was derived from Baron Johann DeKalb (1721-1780), a German soldier who served under Washington at Valley Forge and died a Revolutionary War hero. Three august DeKalb men are credited with the invention of barbed wire and began manufacturing it in 1873. Today DeKalb is a world leader in hybrid seed development and genetic research, as well as the home of Northern Illinois University.

Imagine a landscape alternating between groves of majestic hardwood and vast prairies. Filled with lush grasses, native plants, and sweet, clear streams and abundant with wildlife, it is a gracious land filled with promise. In the distance, smoke rises above a Native American village along one of the many trails in the area. A gathering of 10 to 15 wigwams is situated near a dancing ground and round council house in the area that would come to be known as Coral. Franklin Park

The Treaty of Prairie du Chein, which relocated the Potawatomi Indians and other local tribes west of the Mississippi River, created opportunities for settlement along the Des Plaines River. Several families began to farm on land that they purchased from Claude La Framboise, Alexander Robinson, and the State of Illinois. The totality of this land extended from Irving Park Road to Grand Avenue and west to Mannheim Road. The confluence of the first two railroads constructed in this area after the Civil War attracted a developer named Lesser Franklin. The German immigrant purchased and subdivided four farms and subsequently began the configuration of a village. Franklin Park was incorporated in 1892. The succeeding 50 years, showcased by two world wars and the Great Depression, shaped this town into the fourth-largest industrial community in Illinois, a title it still holds today.

Rogers Park

Rogers Park bears the name of Philip McGregor Rogers, an intrepid and enterprising Irish immigrant who purchased the first tract of land in the area in the 1830s, a time when it was prairie and woodland, populated by Native Americans and white birch trees. As the federal government forced the Native Americans west, European immigrants arrived in greater numbers, forming a community of woodcutters and farmers. The Great Chicago Fire ushered in an era of economic development, and in 1878, Rogers Park incorporated as a village. In 1893, the town was annexed to Chicago, becoming the city's northernmost neighborhood along Lake Michigan. During the Roaring Twenties, Howard Street's grand theaters, jumping nightclubs, and glitzy fashion shops drew adventure seekers by the thousands. Today Rogers Park is one of the most ethnically and socially diverse neighborhoods in the country.

This photographic journal traces Bloomingdale's development chronologically from its earliest days through its sesquicentennial celebration. The area claimed in 1833 by the Meacham brothers, who traveled from the east in search of land and opportunities, encompassed parts of present-day Roselle, Medinah, and Cloverdale. John D. Hertz, of rental car fame, discovered Trout Valley (then a part of unincorporated McHenry County) in the 1920s.

He built a mansion, barns, and polo grounds on the banks of the Fox River, calling his new country estate Leona Farms. Famous landscape architect Jens Jensen designed its scenic landscape, fishing streams, and ponds. Here Hertz raised racehorses, including two Kentucky Derby winners, and hosted Gatsby-like parties for the rich and famous, including Myrna Loy, Will Rogers, and Walt Disney. Eleanor Roosevelt was once a guest too. In 1943, Hertz sold his estate to Otto Schnering, of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger fame, who transformed the grounds from a lush playground to the headquarters of a 10,000-acre farming operation. Old-timers still remember Schnering's six-pony hitch carrying joy-filled passengers down Main Street, the state-of-the-art livestock arena, and the trophy-winning cattle raised at Curtiss Farm.
