Columbia County Past Revealed

People have been drawn to Columbia County, New York, for years. Beyond the region’s picturesque streams, lakes and mountains, the county is filled with the magic of history. Famed pirate Captain Kidd and local Lord of the Manor Robert Livingston were once in cahoots regarding the plundering of the seas. A roaring nightclub fashioned as a ship marooned on dry land, named the Show Boat, drew legendary acts like Ella Fitzgerald and Redd Foxx in the 1930s. The hills and caves of Austerlitz feature a pond that appears to have no bottom, there have been sightings of the “Beast of the Berkshires” and the area was home to outlaws, gangs and many wishing to remain remote. Author Allison Marchese reveals the lost people, places and things of Columbia County.

Local history author and longtime Concord resident Joel A. Lighthouses of the Pacific Coast explores many of the lighthouses and breakwater, pier, and reef lights in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii. Whether it is Eldred Rock Lighthouse in Alaska or Diamond Head Lighthouse in Hawaii, then as now, people have loved to visit the lights while on holiday and to send postcards back home.

Many of these important navigational aids are still in existence and can be visited, thanks to the historical societies and associations that still maintain them. Linda Osborne Cynowa has had a love of lighthouses for many years and has enjoyed visiting and photographing them. She has a background in photography and genealogy, along with postcard collecting and a lifelong love of history. She volunteered at the archives at her local library, researching the historical homes and families in the Romeo and Washington, Michigan, area where she lives. She is the author of Washington Township (2019), Macomb Township (2020), Farming in Northern Macomb County (2021), Lighthouses and Lifesaving on the Great Lakes (2022), and Lighthouse of the North Atlantic Coast (2023), all published by Arcadia Publishing.

Buried in the annals of the region are torrid tales, disasters and the unexplained. Victims of a 1940 train wreck between Milbank and Marvin seemingly never left the scene of the accident. And Captain Luff of The Muskegon disaster can be seen mourning on the banks of Big Stone Lake. Author Deborah Cuyle chronicles the area’s most fascinating and perplexing lore. 

Casting the Cowboy State’s Past

Wyoming’s history is enshrined in the bronze sculptures lining Capitol Avenue and across Cheyenne. The idea, conceived only a decade prior, rapidly grew into the most successful public arts project in city history. Chicago is known throughout the world for its architecture. Although many people are familiar with the city's skyscrapers and public buildings, they often overlook or are unaware of Chicago's mansions that are located throughout the city. These mansions represent Chicago's past and its future, and it can even be said that they are the very embodiment of Chicago and its architecture. These fashionable residences were built to make a statement, and what better way to have done this than to employ the leading architects of the time to design them. These architects included men such as Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Hobson Richardson, Daniel Burnham, and John Wellborn Root. While the city's mansions are significant because of who built them, they are just as important because of who lived in them. Many of these mansions were built for Chicago's elite businessmen and captains of industry-men who represented old money, new money and big money. Just as important were the families of these men and the other residents who came to live in these mansions-for they left a legacy of their own that contributed to the city's history.
