About 1771, William Dobson purchased the original acreage and additional tracts and built an inn near what is now Mountain Street and Main Street. He named this junction Dobson's
Crossroads. On June 2, 1791, President George Washington ate breakfast at Dobson's Tavern. On November 14, 1817, German-born Joseph Kerner (also spelled K¶rner) purchased the land and renamed the area Kerner's Crossroads. This begins the story of Kernersville. The same roads, still graced with historic churches, stores, and homes, crisscross at the heart of this community. K¶rner's Folly, which contains 22 rooms, housed the first private little theater in America.

Historic Cemeteries of Long Beach

The stories of those who lived in the city by the sea begin long before the 1878 date on the oldest headstone found in the city. Long Beach was the site of ceremonies, and perhaps the burial grounds, for the Tongva tribe. Many of those who later settled the city are buried in one of the four known cemeteries, Municipal, Sunnyside, Forest Lawn Long Beach, and All Souls. Two of the cemeteries hold the graves of several hundred Union and Confederate Civil War veterans, one Medal of Honor recipient, and a slave who served in the 1st Colored Heavy Artillery Regiment. The histories of the Municipal and Sunnyside Cemeteries include the 1921 discovery of oil, which made national news as descendants of the deceased fought for the oil underneath the graves. The fight resulted in a second Sunnyside Cemetery that later became Forest Lawn Long Beach. The scene of oil derricks surrounding the cemeteries was so surreal that it caught the attention of Ansel Adams, whose photographs of Sunnyside Cemetery are included.

Austintown Township was first inhabited by Native Americans. In 1788, it became Range 3, Township 2, of the Connecticut Western Reserve and was named for Calvin Austin, a land agent for the Connecticut Land Company. In 1794, John McCollum was the first settler. In 1820, the population was 718. By 1880, coal miners and families increased the population to 2,502. The damming of Meander Creek creating Meander Reservoir put Ohltown underwater and flooded some of West Austintown. After World War II, Austintown grew tremendously. Incorporated in 1778, Auburn has an agriculturally and industrially rich history.
