Its rich history, as chronicled by the Burke Historical Society, shows it to have been no stranger to change and growth. It was the site of several Civil War skirmishes, including the infamous "Christmas Raid" by J.E.B. Stuart, conducted during the early years of that fateful war, and another considered to be the last in Fairfax County, fought at a local gathering place, Arundel's Tavern. From wars and railroads to roads and a racetrack as well as a successful fight to fend off the federal government's effort to build an international airport, Burke's vibrant history reveals a diverse snapshot of America, including baseball and apple pie.
