South Hill was formerly located on the old Buckhorn Road near the Meherrin River. It was the site of the first chartered school in Mecklenburg County in 1814. When the founder/teacher/minister/postmaster died in 1857, many from the community relocated 3 miles east to the Boydton-Petersburg Plank Toll Road. In 1888, W. W. Author John Caknipe Jr. is a third-generation Mecklenburg County resident. His extended family members were some of the earliest pioneers to the area and, since the early 1800s, have participated honorably in every military need, from the Civil War to the present. As local merchants and farmers, Caknipe and his wife have invested their lives in Mecklenburg County. They have a son and a daughter.
