Author Charles Tharp grew up in Dayton and is the city's historian. His tireless efforts to preserve its history have made him a welcome speaker for local organizations. Coauthor Deanna Beineke is a retired teacher and volunteer oral historian who has collected over 50 interviews for the national Veterans History Project. Using the souvenir booklet from the 1898 GAR Encampment as a starting point, they selected vintage images from several public and private collections.
