Many Cleveland boxers fought there during those years, including Jimmy Bivins, Joey Maxim, Chuck Hunter, Georgie Pace, and Carmen Barth. These men all came out of the Cleveland Golden Gloves. Cleveland Arena was the mecca of Ohio boxing with appearances from 50 fighters who at one time held recognition as world champions. Jerry Fitch started following boxing in the 1950s. His love of the sport began while watching televised fights and eventually attending the World Welterweight Championship match between Carmen Basilio and Johnny Saxton at Cleveland Arena on February 22, 1957. He was only 10 years old. Fitch has since participated in many boxing activities; the one that has stayed with him is writing. He has written hundreds of articles for major boxing magazines and authored six books, including Arcadia's Cleveland's Greatest Fighters of All Time. This latest continues his journey.

Reynoldsburg and Truro Township

James C. Reynolds accompanied the National Road construction crew when they built their way to Truro Township from Zanesville in 1830. He decided to stay, and within a short time frame, he built a store that supplied goods and food to the few settlers and road crew. Reynolds was much admired, and by 1831, the village plat map was registered as Reynoldsburg. For the next century, the land was used primarily for farming, and the town eventually became known as the "Birthplace of the Tomato." Alexander W. Livingston developed the first commercial tomato in the country in 1870 after 20 years of experimentation. Many of the townsfolk worked in his fields throughout the township. The Toledo State Hospital opened in 1888, and its design and healing approach were revolutionary for the time. First in the country built entirely on the "cottage model," its plan was intended to create a homelike atmosphere in a beautifully manicured landscape. Treatment methods were based on the "moral treatment" philosophy, the belief that calming surroundings with nutritious food, productive work, and diversion would help the disturbed mind to heal. Over the years, facilities were expanded to serve a burgeoning patient population, and medications and treatments evolved. In the 1950s, however, the population began a steady decline due to the advent of services in the community and to advances in psychotropic drugs. As the old buildings were emptied, they were demolished, and all were gone by 1981.
