It is easy to look at a place such as Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood and think that it encompasses strictly the dead. But a closer look reveals many lives and stories told throughout the pages of time by those who have lived them. To define Allegheny Cemetery as simply a place does not do it justice. It is not only a physical location, but a crossroads in history, and a point in time where each of these lives converge. Images of America: Allegheny Cemetery shares these legacies with the hope that present and future generations will do the same.

From Colonial times to the present, the warmth and ambiance of Bucks County's inns and taverns have ceaselessly beckoned those seeking refreshment or rest from the rigors of the road. Whether welcomed by the glow of a crackling fire or the sounds of lively conversation, guests were sure to find sustenance, shelter, companionship, and camaraderie within their walls. Besides providing lodging, these celebrated "publick houses" have long played an important role in the development of this richly historical region as meeting places, stagecoach stops, news centers, entertainment venues, polling stations, and auction houses. Bucks County Inns and Taverns documents how these establishments were once the focal point of rural and town life and how many continue today as landmarks, inspiring a sense of pride in Bucks County residents.

Beyond the rustic gates of the Forest Hill Cemetery in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, lies a vast wealth of history. Early in 1870, George Sanderson, Elisha Phinney, William Breck, and J.A. Robertson, with J. Gardner Sanderson and George S. Kingsbury, purchased a 50-acre tract of land from the Pennsylvania Coal Company, which became the last resting place for the cemetery's 18,000 residents. The Civil War section of the cemetery is home to over 300 Union soldiers and two Confederates. Numerous congressmen, lieutenant governors, state representatives, and other elected officials make up Forest Hill's political graveyard. The rich, the poor, the famous, and the unsung all have stories to be told, and this book recounts their tales.

Following the drilling of the world's first oil well in 1859 just south of town, the small village of Titusville exploded into a bustling city. Through the early 1870s, newly prosperous citizens built stores, banks, hotels, and churches, as well as hundreds of residences. Into the 20th century, residents remodeled or built anew, leaving Titusville with a crop of Victorian buildings, many of which still stand today. The nearby cities of Petroleum Center and Pithole developed at significant oil production sites. As production moved elsewhere in the 1870s, both cities were abandoned and soon vanished completely. Using vintage images from the unmatched collection of the Drake Well Museum, Oil Boom Architecture: Titusville, Pithole, and Petroleum Center documents the rich architectural history of these three boomtowns.

Philadelphia, the birthplace of America, is the final resting place of some of the nation's greatest citizens. The burial grounds of Christ Church hold the remains of Benjamin Franklin and six other signers of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia pioneered the development of the rural cemetery with the establishment of Laurel Hill, eternal home to Gettysburg hero George Gordon Meade and thirty-nine other Civil War-era generals. In Philadelphia's Jewish, Catholic, and African American burial grounds rest such notable figures as Rebecca Gratz, model for the Jewish heroine of Walter Scott's Ivanhoe; John Barry, Catholic father of the U.S. Navy; and Octavius Catto, an African American civil-rights leader of the nineteenth century. Finally, there are the vanished cemeteries, such as Monument, Lafayette, and Franklin. Transformed into playgrounds and parking lots, these cemeteries were obliterated with sometimes horrific callousness. Philadelphia Graveyards and Cemeteries tells the intriguing history of these burial grounds, whether revered or long forgotten.

Held in Philadelphia from May 10 through October 10, the 1876 Centennial Exhibition celebrated the 100th anniversary of American independence.

Philadelphia hosted 37 nations in five main buildings and 250 additional structures on 285 acres of land. The celebration looked backward to commemorate the progress made over the 100-year period, and it announced to the world that American invention and innovation was on a par with that of our foreign counterparts. Patriotism abounded, as did messages of industrial and commercial prowess that promised a brighter future for all. Over nine million people attended this awesome consumer spectacle, an event that set the tone for a long series of world's fairs yet to come.

In the 19th century, the positioning of Pittsburgh as a major manufacturing center and the subsequent rise of the area's steel industry created a wave of prosperity that prompted the beneficiaries of that wealth to construct extravagant residences. Wealthy enclaves sprang up in the city's East End, across the river in neighboring Allegheny City, and into the countryside. Pittsburgh's Mansions explores the stately homes of the area's prominent residents from the 1830s through the 1920s. Businessmen such as H.J. Heinz, Henry Clay Frick, and members of the Mellon family commissioned elaborate homes from the preeminent architects of their day. Firms such as Alden & Harlow, Janssen & Abbott, and Rutan & Russell left their marks on the city's landscape, often contributing iconic public buildings as well as expansive private homes. Though many of the residences have since been lost, Pittsburgh's Mansions offers a look back at the peak of the city's prominence.

The Hyde-Murphy Company was one of the largest and most renowned specialty woodworking mills in the United States. The company was a producer of high-quality architectural millwork and constructed elegant homes, businesses, and public buildings around the country, with offices in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, DC. The company was founded in 1901 when two families merged their business interests. Joseph S. Hyde owned a sawmill in Ridgway, in the heart of the Pennsylvania lumber industry, covered with valuable, mature, and virgin timber forests. Walter P. Murphy owned a planing mill downstream on the Allegheny River in Freeport. Hyde floated his lumber downriver where Murphy turned the wood into architectural products. It was natural for the two families to merge to manufacture high-quality woodworking products. Murphy moved to Ridgway, and the company flourished. The business survived a devastating fire, rebuilding and prospering, and its artistic, distinctive woodwork can be seen today in the Library of Congress, the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Institution. The Hyde-Murphy Company ceased operation in 1961.

Architect Horace Trumbauer (1868-1938) is well known for the wide range of residential, commercial, and civic structures he designed in and around Philadelphia.

His works can be found along Old York Road and the Main Line, as well as in Philadelphia and Springfield Township, Montgomery County. During the American renaissance in architecture, Trumbauer masterfully interpreted the classical styles, designing many of the area's most notable structures. Captured in stunning exterior and interior photographs, The Philadelphia Area Architecture of Horace Trumbauer highlights the architect's most significant works, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Keswick Theatre, the Widener Building, Whitemarsh Hall, Lynnewood Hall, and Ardrossan.

As the ink was drying on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other documents that established the United States, millions of Americans hungered for new legal tender coinage from the young sovereign nation. Following calls by Alexander Hamilton and other Founding Fathers for the nation to issue its own money, Congress passed legislation to officially establish the United States Mint in 1792. Growing from its humble beginnings as a collection of small buildings in the nation's onetime capital city of Philadelphia, the United States Mint now stands along Independence National Historical Park as the largest coin factory in the world. While the Philadelphia Mint is one of several official United States coin manufacturing facilities, it remains the heart of coining operations in the nation and is also one of the most popular attractions in "The City of Brotherly Love."

Washington Crossing is one of America's most revered historic landmarks.

The crossing site is marked by the creation of two historic parks: Washington Crossing State Park, New Jersey, created in 1912, and Washington Crossing Historic Park, Pennsylvania, created in 1917. Washington Crossing illustrates how these two parks commemorate George Washington's courage to lead his army across the ice-choked Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 to attack an isolated garrison of Hessians located at Trenton, which would turn the tide of the American Revolution. Filled with images from the collections of historian Peter Osborne, the Washington Crossing Foundation, the Bucks County Historical Society, the Trenton Free Public Library, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the book includes an exposé of Emanuel Leutze's famous painting Washington Crossing the Delaware--a world-renowned symbol of freedom.
