Fort Oglethorpe, adjacent to Chickamauga Battlefield Park in northwest Georgia, was created in 1902. During national emergencies, the post expanded temporarily into the park. Cavalry troops trained at the post until 1942, and the WAACs/WACs arrived in 1943. The post was considered an elite assignment, with polo matches and dances. Dwight Eisenhower and John Pershing were stationed here. Visiting dignitaries included Sgt. Alvin York, Bing Crosby, Lana Turner, and U.S. presidents Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt. It has 106 miles of streets, sixty-five acres of public parks, fifteen miles of street railway and five miles of wharves. Geographically, it is at the head of ship navigation on the Savannah River, eighteen miles from the ocean, on a plateau fifty feet above the level of the sea. Bay street is the great commercial thoroughfare, and is lined with mercantile houses, banks, and business offices. The Custom-House, the City Exchange, Post-Office, and the Cotton Exchange are on "The Bay." Congress and Broughton are the principal retail business streets. Bull street is the great promenade, and extends from the City Exchange, overlooking the river, to the park, and beyond to the southern limits and the White Bluff shell road.

Beginning in 1946 and until his retirement in 1987, Pierson Stell, along with partner Ray Kilgore, photographed events big and small in Winder and surrounding communities. Like all professional photographers of their time, Stell and Kilgore did portrait work, weddings, and commercial photography; however, they took their art several steps beyond the usual. Timber and turpentine from the Georgia pine forests, as well as cotton, were the main commercial activities of the early town. The city of Pembroke began as a result of the extension of the Savannah and Western Railroad through the upper part of Bryan County in 1889. The town's first resident was M.E. Carter, a member of the railroad construction crew, who lived in a box car that was switched off at a siding; Carter would later serve as mayor of Pembroke. By the late 1890s, substantial permanent buildings were being constructed, and by 1900, Pembroke was the commercial center of Bryan County. It was incorporated as a city in 1905, and the next 20 years saw Pembroke develop into a prosperous town, with the formation of the first bank in Bryan County, a school, and many businesses.
