The installation of Seneca Turnpike boosted New Hartford's economy as it became the main thoroughfare west from Utica. Prosperity followed, especially after Commercial Drive was developed in the 20th century. Today, New Hartford is Oneida County's retail center.

Formed in 1876, the Oneida County History Center has served the community as a repository for artifacts, archival material, and over 30,000 images, many of which are featured in this publication. The New Hartford Historical Society exists in the former Point School in the village. Through their collections and publications, both societies promote the rich and vibrant history of the greater Mohawk Valley.
