John F. Kennedy is one of only three presidents not interred in his home state. Sitting next to his coffin on the flight home from Dallas, Jacqueline Kennedy began formulating plans for his funeral and burial. The following day, in a raw November rain, she selected the Arlington hillside as his final resting place. For three days, in a majestic display of elegance, strength, grace, and courage, the 34-year-old widow led the nation through the excruciating task of laying its president to rest. Within days, she returned to Arlington, and in a brief ceremony, their two infant children were laid to rest beside their father, beneath the eternal flame she lit. Work immediately began on the permanent resting place and memorial, and in March 1967, the final reinterment took place. A half-century later, four million people come yearly to pay their respects to President Kennedy, his widow, and two children.

Loosely established in the early 1800s and originally named Burke's Station, the village of Burke, Virginia, provided fertile ground for farmers, politicians, and enterprising citizens. This rural hamlet, nestled in an area 20 miles from the District of Columbia, began its existence supporting the surrounding farmers needing a nexus for commerce and community. Through the decades, Burke transformed from a tiny agricultural area to its current status as a bedroom community, which conceals its vibrant connections to the past. Its rich history, as chronicled by the Burke Historical Society, shows it to have been no stranger to change and growth. It was the site of several Civil War skirmishes, including the infamous "Christmas Raid" by J.E.B. Stuart, conducted during the early years of that fateful war, and another considered to be the last in Fairfax County, fought at a local gathering place, Arundel's Tavern. From wars and railroads to roads and a racetrack as well as a successful fight to fend off the federal government's effort to build an international airport, Burke's vibrant history reveals a diverse snapshot of America, including baseball and apple pie.

February 22, 1960, bore witness to an event that would forever change the social, political, and economic life of a city, a state, and millions of inhabitants.

The arrest of 34 Virginia Union University students during a sit-in protest at the most upscale department store in Richmond, Virginia, heralded the upending of a long-established way of life and a change of direction from which there would be no turning back. The students would see their actions galvanize a community into effecting wide-ranging reforms in desegregation and play a significant role in ending the nearly 70-year grip on power of one of the nation’s strongest political machines. Bafflingly, their achievement faded into obscurity, and only in recent years has its importance been recognized.

Dr. Kimberly A. Matthews is a professor of leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Matthews earned her doctorate in education at Virginia Commonwealth University (2012) and began teaching with Virginia Commonwealth University’s LEAD living-learning program. She is the author of a history of the Richmond Crusade for Voters. Dr. Raymond Pierre Hylton is professor of history at Virginia Union University. Dr. Hylton earned his doctorate in history at the University College Dublin, Ireland (1986), and first taught at Virginia Union as an adjunct instructor in 1988. He became a full-time faculty member in 1991 and served as dean and department chair. He is the author of a History of Virginia Union University.

During the 1880s, Chesapeake Bay boatbuilders began constructing small wooden open boats, referred to as deadrise boats, out of planks with V-shaped bows. As boatbuilders created larger deadrise boats, decks were installed to provide more work and payload space; these deck boats also had a house/pilothouse near the stern and a mast closer to the bow of the boat. Deck boats were powered by gasoline engines but also utilized sails and wind. From the 1910s to the 1940s, auxiliary "steadying" sails were raised to help steady the boat when encountering adverse seas. More deck boats were built in the 1920s than in any other decade. Over the history of the boats, several thousand worked the bay in the freight business, were used to buy and plant oysters, worked in the bay's pound net fishery, and dredged for crabs and oysters. Approximately 40 boats are left on the bay. A few still work the water. Some have found new life as recreational yachts, and others are education boats owned by museums and nonprofits. In 2004, boat owners formed the Chesapeake Bay Buyboat Association, which holds an annual rendezvous at different ports as a way to educate the public about this unique aspect of Chesapeake Bay maritime history.
