History book to aid schoolhouse

When Lee Weidner began digging into the history of the township, he had no idea how rich the soil would be. Weidner, a former Nazareth Area School District teacher, teamed up with Lower Saucon Township Historical Society President Karen Samuels and the society's vice president, Barbara Ryan, to conduct research for a book on the people and places in the township, which was chartered in 1743.

When Robert Yoder and his wife Nadine moved to Newport in 1998, they shopped local thrift shops and antique stores for inexpensive art for the walls of their new home. "We'd decided some vintage Newport postcards we found in one of the shops were just the thing," said Yoder. "We purchased a couple of them, had them framed and displayed them in our home. I found the cards fascinating and bought others. Before long, I had a growing collection of Newport postcards."

The Moore County Historical Association is holding a reception Friday afternoon on its new exhibit of historic photographs illustrating a book published in 2004, titled “East and West Southern Pines.” The reception for the general public or anyone else who wishes to attend is from 3 to 4 p.m., July 22, at the old public library in Southern Pines on Broad Street. The building is next to the U.S. Postal Service and is currently used for the Southern Pines town water billing and planning department.

The Alameda County Historical Society's annual summer outing event is slated for July 31 and includes a visit to various historic sites in and around Livermore, said society president Ed Clausen. "We are starting things off at 11 a.m. with a guided tour of the historic Ravenswood Home and Park, followed by a box lunch on the grounds," he said. "After lunch there will be maps and info for self-guided tours of the area, including a stop at the old Duarte Garage of Lincoln Highway fame."

"Bramwell, A Town of Millionaires" is selling fast and will be the subject of an author's signing today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Hearthside Books on Bland Street in Bluefield. Elizabeth Osborne of Princeton had several copies with her during a meeting Wednesday evening and sold all.

Signing copies of his new book about the history of Princeton University, Richard D. Smith received the ultimate compliment. "It was at a book-signing recently at the university store," Smith recalls. "An alumnus, who is on the Princetoniana Committee, which works to preserve Princeton University history, came up to me and said, `There are things in your book that even I didn't know.' And that, to me, was the highest praise, because while alumni of any university certainly love their schools, there is nothing in the world like the absolute devotion of Princeton graduates."

Bridgeport native Pehanick shows close to 200 postcards of the Connecticut city (from his collection of about 3,000) from the years 1900 to 1940. During these years, Bridgeport was a bustling city with businesses of all kinds and a vacation destination for the well-to-do from New York City and nearby areas. The postcards show the factories, restaurants, mansions, shopping districts, amusements, and parks and seasides which made Bridgeport an outstanding regional city during the early decades of the 1900s.
