Author Bio
With the help of photographs from established public archives in the Santa Clara Valley as well as several private collections, this book serves as a window into a time when San Jose had an abundance of theatres with twinkling marquees and flashing signs. Gary Lee Parks is a board member of the Theatre Historical Society of America and has assisted in the preservation of historic Bay Area theatres as both a professional and a volunteer.
Jack Tillmany, recognized authority on early cinema and author of the Images of America volume Theatres of San Francisco, draws from a personal archive gathered during a 30-year career in cinema management. Coauthor Jennifer Dowling collects movie-related ephemera, writes, and gives illustrated talks on the history of Oakland's commercial districts. Together they draw back the heavy curtain of time to rediscover Oakland's theatrical treasures.
